The Forway Surname
« on: Tuesday 27 July 21 18:54 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I was wondering if there were any people on here with the surname "Forway".
I'm interested in it's origins, for example is it an habitational name ?
It seems to have been more common in Essex that anywhere else. But there are some in Truro today.
Thank you.

Have you checked the Surname Interests Board?  Scroll to bottom of page & link is under TOOLS

The 1939 register only has 22 entries for that surname -19 of which were in Essex

1911 census - 18 entries - 14 in Essex

Carlin (Ireland & Liverpool) Doughty & Wright (Liverpool) Dick & Park (Scotland & Liverpool)

Thanks Carole,
Earlier on there were just as many in Linkinhorne in Cornwall.
I'm not actually researching the Forway family, rather than trying to establish where the name came from.
I have a record which says the guy I'm chasing was born in "Forway, England".
I can find nothing on this as a place, It's either a mis-spelling (possibly Fowey, Cornwall), or it doesn't exist any longer.
So, I was wondering if anybody of that name today, knew of it's origins.
Thanks for your interest.
Rob

Canada 411 has none in all of Canada.  https://www.canada411.ca/search/si/2/Forway/Canada one being used as a given name.  However fewer people have land lines these days so not everyone is listed.

1921 Census has none as well or in any voter's list.

Only one birth on record in Quebec in 1897 a Martine Ruby Forway.
2 Emigration entries and 8 mentions in Newspaper
Most recent is the 1960's; on in Manitoba the other Alberta.  This is from Ancestry so no guarantee as to its accuracy.

For what its worth Ancestry has total records of Forway as follows...

North America 115 (majority U.S.)
UK 68
Australia 11

Thanks Don,
The older UK entries are in Essex and in Linkinhorne in Cornwall.
So, there only seem to have been 2 families about 200 miles apart.
The question is...where do they come together ?? (if they do !)
I'm more interested in the origins of the name, rather than the people themselves.
But one could lead to the other.
Thanks again for your help.

Hi,
Thanks that's a great shout !
I've looked at Farway before and discounted it, but I'll have another look.
Thank you.
