COULTHARD families in Dumfries 1820's
« on: Wednesday 28 July 21 07:14 BST (UK) »
Hello,
I'm looking in to Coulthard's in the Langholm and Canonbie area and also over in Longtown, Cumbria.
There seemed to be an agricultural background with the various Coulthard threads. One family may well have had employment connections with Sir James Malcolm of Canonbie and earlier at Burnfoot.
A young William Coulthard was the first free settler Coulthard to go to South Australia in 1836.

Have had great success in other searches on RootsChat so trying again for my latest project.

Thanks in advance,
SydneyDave

Is this the person you refer to?

Sir James Malcolm KCB Born 13 Jan 1767 in Westerkirk, Dumfriesshire, Scotland (Google search)

At Westerkirk in 1861
MALCOLM   William E   Head    W   M   43   Landed Prop & Farmer Emp 19lab   ENG

One of the servants is
COULTHARD   Robert   Servnt   U   F   32   Coachman Dom Serv   ENG

Also in Westerkirk in 1861, he is with a Robert Nichol Factor Or Land Steward & others

COULTHARD   Thomas   Servnt   M   M   29   Ag Labourer   DFS   Langholm

No Coulthard's there in 1841 but plenty elsewhere.

It might be worth looking at https://www.freecen.org.uk there are records for some areas of Dumfriesshire 1841/51/61 census returns.

Colin

Clarke, Trickett, Orton, Lawless, Norton, Detheridge, Kirby, Goodfellow, Wagstaff, Lowe, etc.

Thank you very much Colin. Will look at this more thoroughly in the morning.
Yes that looks like the Sir James Malcolm. The Robert and Thomas are of interest....that fits with the various work information I have uncovered. Can I get back to you please about the W M U abbreviations.
Thanks again,
Good night from Australia !
David

Hi David.
W = Widowed M = Married or Male U unmarried

Robert   Servnt   U   F  = F is Female so that might be a transcription error?

Good Luck.

Hi there, I do apologise for tardiness - I am in the final throes of preparing a paper for the South Australian History Month - which is includes doing a power point presentation ... and thereafter a Book ... well the book was meant to be finished now (oops) and covers Coulthard, Malcolms and others - so I am trying not to be distracted at the moment - my apologies.
