Looking for parents of my x2 great grandad Hugh brown
« on: Wednesday 28 July 21 22:04 BST (UK) »
For a while I have been trying to research the Brown side of my family. My Grandad was Hugh Wallace Brown from Killaughey, Millisle. He was born on 19th January 1898 mentioned on a birth record I had for him but when he died on 14th July 1977, his official death record said he was born 21 January 1898, Donaghadee (which does come under Millisle) but I am assuming that was a wrong day of his birth on the death certificate?

The only time a Hugh Wallace Brown was mentioned on a census record in 1901 and 1911 for Killaughey is in 1901 here: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Down/Ballycross/Killaughey/1255825/ (He is just mentioned as Hugh Brown on 1911 census)

It says his parents are Hugh Brown and Sarah Brown. Sarah was Sarah Lowry and her father was Andrew Lowry a farmer from Ballycastle Townland (beside Mount Stewart) near Greyabbey, Co Down. They are the right parents as my great aunt was named Sarah Lowry Brown and my great-great Unlce was Andrew Lowry Brown, both named after my great grandmothers family.

Hugh Brown and Sarah Lowry got married on 24th December 1889 in Ballyblack Presbyterian Church and it says Hugh Brown was from Killaughey and his dad was Hugh Brown (farmer). I have attached their marriage record.

I am trying to find out who that Hugh Brown's parents are. In the 1901 census it mentions Hugh Brown was 42 which would make his birth around 1858-1859. I originally thought that Hugh Browns parents were Hugh Brown and Agnes Wallace which might explain why my great grandad had the middle name of Wallace.

Hugh Brown and Agnes Wallace Married 1855, Newtownards first presbyterian Church. Hugh Brown was a farmer and was living in Drumawhey at the time and his dad was listed as William Brown, farmer and Agnes Wallace was from Whitespots, Newtownards. Her father was Hugh Wallace a farmer and gives her age as 18 when she got married so born around 1833. Didn't mention Hugh Browns age, just said Full. When they got married they lived in Killaughey, Millisle.

This webpage says: http://www.newtownardshistory.co.uk/family-brown.htm

Brown, William - 1st. October 1858 - {Father Hugh Brown of Drumawhey, Killaughy and Cunningburn} - {Mother Agness Wallace}
Brown, Robert - 14th. October 1861 - {Father Hugh Brown of Drumawhey, Killaughy and Cunningburn} - {Mother Agness Wallace}
Brown, James - 25th. November 1864 - {Father Hugh Brown of Drumawhey, Killaughy and Cunningburn} - {Mother Agness Wallace}
Brown, Hugh - 16th. March 1866 - {Father Hugh Brown of Drumawhey, Killaughy and Cunningburn} - {Mother Agness Wallace}
Brown, Margaret - 6th. November 1872 - {Father Hugh Brown of Drumawhey, Killaughy and Cunningburn} - {Mother Agness Wallace}
Family were members of Ballyblack Presbyterian

It says that Hugh Brown was born 16 March 1866, not 1858-59 but there is no references to backup that info though. I also checked: https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/ I could find no mention of a Hugh Brown born in 1866 to a Hugh Brown and Agnes Wallace.

Agnes died on 23 Feb 1917 Killaughey and was widowed and was buried in Ballycopeland Presbyterian Graveyard in Millisle:

As far as I could find, her husband, Hugh Brown, left their home in 1875 and didn't come back. Agnes reported him missing in a few Newspapers. I don't know if he ever came back as I found out that Hugh Brown died in 1891 in Derryaghy, Lisburn and was buried in Movilla Cemetary, Newtownards. His will probate said retired farmer from Lisburn and that he left his effects to his widow Agnes Brown in Killaughey.

Is there anyway I can confirm who the Hugh Brown, the father of Hugh Brown who married Sarah Lowry is and if he is the Hugh Brown who married Agnes Wallace?

Hugh Brown (as recorded on his birth record) was born on the 19th January 1898 at Killaghy townland, which is just west of the village of Millisle.

MMN Lowry... and remember people in those times didn't really know when they were born.

Sarah Lowry married Hugh Brown in 1889 at Ballyblack Presbyterian Church. She lived at Ballycastle.

Thanks for the info, but I know all of what you mentioned. I know Millisle and Donaghadee very well and where the townlands are and the surrounding 5 mile radius.

One thing that might help, on Hugh Brown's death record: https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1921/05107/4403689.pdf

It says WM J Brown cousin was present at his death.  There was a William James Brown in Killaughey at the same time, here is the 1911 census for him and his family: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Down/Donaghadee_Rural/Killaghy/264373/

Sarah mentioned is Sarah Prichard, William and Sarah were married in Greyabbey on 23 June 1896: https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1896/10489/5819872.pdf

There is a grave in Millisle erected by William James Brown: https://billiongraves.com/grave/John-Brown/17409406

Brown graves in Movilla Cemetary in Newtownards that were erected by William James and John Brown of Killaughey: https://billiongraves.com/grave/Maggie-McTear/3322314

I know them because that Margaret Brown married James Matear (seems that Matear/Mateer/Mateir/McTear/McTeir name was interchangable at the time): https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1895/10534/5836942.pdf

James was the son of James Matear from Killaughey. I know that because James brother (Father of James who married Margaret Brown), brother was William Matear. William married Martha Taylor from Ballyvester, Donaghadee. Martha Taylor was my 1st cousin x4 removed and her parents were James Taylor and Eliza Jane Waugh (I know the genealogy of that side of my family quite well). William, Martha and some of their children are buried in Donaghadee Church of Ireland

OK, doing research I have discovered that my x3 great grandparents are Hugh Brown and Agnes Wallace. On Hugh Browns marriage record I have attached, it mentioned in my previous posts, it listed his father as William Brown. It gave Hughs residence as Drumawhy. I am wondering if its one of the same William Brown from Drumahey on this grave in Movilla Cemetary: https://billiongraves.com/grave/William-James-Brown/4441238

The grave says:

Erected By William Brown of Drumawhey in memory of his father John Brown who departed this life 5th September 1833 aged 86 years. Also his mother Agnes Brown alias McCullough who departed this life 11th February 1817 aged 71. Also the above mentioned William Brown who departed this life 24th January 1857 aged 72

Inscribed by William Brown of Drumawhey in memory of his son Thomas James Brown who died in infancy. Also his daughter Jane Brown who died 24th September 1877 aged 20 years. Also his mother Jane Brown who died 20th Oct 1881 aged 50 years. Also his wife Eliza Brown who died 12th May 1891 aged 64 years. Also his wife Sarah Brown who died 12th May 1891 aged 64 years and also the above mentioned William Brown who died 1st Dec 1905 aged 78 years

Is there any way to find out if one of the William Brown's mentioned here are the father of Hugh Brown who married Agnes Wallace? I did get several DNA matches on Ancestry to several people who are directly related to a Thomas Brown who married a Jane Burch on April 17 1877 in Newtownards and that marriage gives his residence as Drumawhey and Robert Brown as his father. There is a grave in Movilla erected by a Robert Brown of Drumawhey which could be him.
