Help with Thomas Wilkinson
« on: Wednesday 28 July 21 23:08 BST (UK) »
Hello,

Sorry if this is something easy but I have been searching around in circles for hours!

I have a fellow Thomas Wilkinson, he was convicted in Newcastle on the 16th of March 1836 and transported on the Eden to Van Diemen's Land the same year. Now, I have a Thomas Wilkinson of the same age as this one on my family tree and in the same area who promptly disappears at about this point leaving his family behind. I have failed to find a burial for him and I'm wondering if he is the transported Thomas Wilkinson. What I am looking for is any convict records or registers which might give a little more detail about him which could prove this one way or the other particularly if there are any records which would mention any family back home, is this something that might exist? All I could find was this which wasn't too much help for what I need:https://convictrecords.com.au/convicts/wilkinson/thomas/8599

I would be so grateful if anyone is able to help, thanks for reading,

Dan

Smashing, thank you so much, his wife was called Alice, he had three not two children but everything else checks out, I think this is him, massively appreciated, it has been ten years of wondering what happened to him. And that link is amazing, I found one of these documents but it wasn't searchable and I was literally reading every page working through it!

Sorry for the late reply but it has been night time in England, thank you again,

Just trying to find some more information for you.
It seems he was aged 31 when arrived in Tasmania - so born about 1805.
The 1841 convict muster has him assigned to / working for Mr. Gibson in Launceston.
1846 He received a ticket of leave
1849 He received a conditional pardon.

Hello,

Thank you so much, almost everything fits, age, place and wife's name and I can't find a rival marriage for a Thomas and Alice Wilkinson in these years in the area and their last child was born prior to this date- the family are on the 1841 census without him. Also his wife has further illegitimate children after he had gone- this would explain why she couldn't remarry.

The only sticking points are that Thomas and Alice had three children and not two. I also can't read the occupation given on his description but it does not look like pitman, collier or miner which is what he was for the baptism of his son John. I have attached it if anyone can read it better than me? It is annoying as everything else fits.

Anyway, thank you for the continued information, I am a little lost with records outside of England,

Have a good day,

Dan

Sorry Neal1961, just saw that! Thank you. I think that still ties in, I am going to go with this, thank you everyone for the help!

Hello,

I would just like to say that this Thomas is now proved to be mine- the two children quibble was resolved when I realised his third child was born after he left.

After the information you all provided and some extra from Neale1961, I have found that he snuck back into England in 1857 and is living with his dead wife's sister on census in 1861. I have been researching this line for over ten years and Thomas has always been a dead end, I just want to say a massive thank you to everyone who has helped, have a good week everyone,
