Chapterhouse Court 1840 (St Gregory by St Paul’s parish)
« on: Saturday 31 July 21 17:24 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone, I’m looking for help in locating the above address (realising, of course, that it’s almost certainly no longer extant). My fourth great grandfather lived here, while plying his trade as an Accountant. I’d be very grateful for any further information, or directions as to where I might find an answer.
Many thanks

Have you located it on the 1841 census as that should give a rough idea as to where it is.  What was his name

One newspaper article suggests that it was the North side of St Pauls Churchyard , another states it lead from St Pauls Churchyard to Paternoster Row

Hi Rosie, yes, it was in the 1841 census. His name was Richard Simpson. I believe he came from Ireland. He variously states he’s an Accountant and a Solicitor. He died of typhoid in 1845 (sadly). Three of four daughters successively married my 3rd Gt Grandfather (when that was illegal), Arthur Bentley. They are buried in Highgate Cemetery.

Thank you. This is really interesting. I’d a feeling it might be that side of St Pauls, looking at the parish boundaries.

Studying the various maps, Chapterhouse Court dog-legged round the Chapterhouse built by Wren in 1712.
This OS Map page shows it in the lower of the three images ...

This recent photo also shows the location ...

Here is the entry in Elmes' A Topographical Dictionary of London and its Environs (1831):

"Chapter-House-Court, St. Paul's Church-yard, is on the north side of the church-yard, at the corner of the Chapter-house, whence it derives its name; it leads into Paternoster-row, by the side of the Chapter coffee-house, and opposite Ivy-lane."  (page 115)

Thank you so much! That’s really illuminating.
I wonder what quality of abode it would have been…
