Gainsborough Union Workhouse records ?
« on: Monday 02 August 21 15:49 BST (UK) »
Hi,
My ancestor, Jane Hill, died in the Union Workhouse in Gainsborough in October 1877 aged 63.
I have her death certificate but wondered if there are any workhouse records she may be in.
Many thanks.

Is it possible Jane was not a resident but died in the hospital

I'm not sure when the next day is planned but it may be worth contacting the Gainsborough Heritage Centre re the burial as they have regular (Covid permitting), days where they open up the burial registers at the General Cemetery and could probably do a lookup.

There's no listing on the findagrave website but it is generally added to by people researching their tree rather than by a database upload. In the last few weeks the council have laid many stones flat after topple testing, if a stone exists (which may not be the case), it may no longer be standing.

You could register with the findagrave site for free and add a memorial if you wish to do so.

Just spotted a problem. She died on 2nd October 1877 so her burial can’t have been in the January of that year ???
All the other details are correct though.

The transcript does give month as Jan but it is not on the same line as the year, transcript is vague as it also states 'Cause of death buried by friends'  ::)

On the death certificate it gives cause of death as paralysis.
She was a widow but had a son living nearby.
I wonder if it means her friends buried her or that she was buried in a grave located near her friends ?

UPDATE-  just purchased a copy scan of the burial entry, she was buried on October 5th 1877. Many years later 2 more people were buried in the same plot.
I’m not sure what’s going on with the workhouse register though, human error perhaps ?
