Register of Harbour masters Kingstown/Dunlaoighre
« on: Wednesday 04 August 21 04:14 BST (UK) »
Hi, im wondering would there be a register/list of people who may have served as Harbourmaster for Kingstown during the late 19th early 20th century?
Im particularly interested in the name 'Garret Hanlon, possibly spelt O'Hanlon, I am aware of a James Hanlon who was a 'pilot', but am having trouble tracking Garret who according to family legend once held the above position.
Thank you.

From previous searches I've done I remember seeing the Kingstown Harbour Master mentioned in Thom's directories, e.g. for 1910 the Harbour Master is a Captain Arthur Fosberry Holmes R.N.. If I remember correctly he's in the position for a number of years.

here he is on the 1911 census, slightly mistranscribed

could this be the same person in 1911 ?

Garrett Hanlon age46 'Berthing Master', wife Mary, children Mary Gertrude and Gerald James, address is Dublin South City. A Berthing master would work for a Harbour Master

And a witness to that death is his daughter by the name of Mary Byrne

As usual excellent response from all, thank you so much, much appreciated, and the family story regs Garret holding the position of 'harbour master' has finally been cleared up.

........and the family story regs Garret holding the position of 'harbour master' has finally been cleared up.

On his marriage in 1906 to Mary Hogan, he describes himself as a harbour master's assistant.

For the birth record of his daughter Ita Bridget in 1911, his wife Mary describes him as a berthing master.
