Truderscaig, Sutherland
« on: Thursday 05 August 21 21:33 BST (UK) »
I have found these birth records for the children of Murdoch MacKay and Janet MacKay:
Barbara     1819  Farr
Johan        1814  Swordly
Alexander  1810  Truderscaig
Sophia       1809  Farr
Mary          1807  Farr
William       1805  Truderscaig
Erick          1804  Truderscaig
There is also a 'missing' Donald c 1790 (who is my direct ancestor) and a gap between him and Erick.

I was always told the family originally came from Strathnaver and were cleared to Berryhill (Farr).
Was Truderscaig a township?
Am I looking at 2 different families as Alexander's birth record seems out of sync?

Grateful for any suggestions.

If Donald was b 1790 that is a big gap between him & Erick b 1804.  It also makes him 29 when Barbara was born.

Are you sure Donald was b 1790?

When did Donald die?  If 1855 onwards - does his death cert confirm his parents names as Murdoch & Janet & was Janet's maiden name also MacKay

Why do you say Alexanders birth is out of sync?

Thank you for your reply.

Donald died in 1864 and his age is given as 74.
His parents Murdoch and Janet mn McKay are confirmed in the death record.
In the 1861 census his age is 73
In the 1841 census his age is 50
The gap in ages has caused me to question whether this is one family or two.

If the family had moved to Farr after 1805 then Alexander's birth at Truderscaig seems odd.

Given the birthyears in your opening post - the gap is too great for it to be all the same family
1861 birthplace is Farr
