Baptism entry Jane Bonnet 1814, copy please ?
« on: Saturday 07 August 21 13:05 BST (UK) »
My ancestor was baptised in Beckingham, Nottinghamshire on 31/1/1814
It was wrongly transcribed as Jane Bonnet, daughter of George and Sarah.
Her actual name was Burnett !
I’d love a copy if the actual baptism entry if anyone could help please.
I’m a member of Anc..try but it’s not there to see !
Thankyou.

It is recorded as Bonnett on Free Reg.

There is an oppurtunity to report an error. Perhaps you can ask them to check the original record entry.

Yes I’ve reported the error.
I’ve traced the family right up to the present, they are Burnett.
Easy name to mis-spell back then !
Hoping to locate a copy of the original entry.

It was probably not wrongly transcribed.

The NFHS disc also shows the name spelled Bonnett.

Bonnett sounds very similar to Burnett, and whoever filled in the register likely didn't ask how they spelled it. George and Sarah might not have known how to spell it.

The Nottinghamshire Archives would be able to send you a copy of the register, details on how to submit an order here:

Over the decades it’s gone from Bonnet to Burnitt and then to Burnett.
Quite understandable given that most people back then were illiterate !

It’s a shame those records aren’t available online like so many others are. The Nottingham archive place want £11 for a copy of the entry 😱😱
Would there be anywhere else I could download it from ?

Family Search have digital images of these parish records, but you'd have to visit a Family History Centre, whenever they re-open.
The agreement with the record holders means they can't make them available on the web but you would be able to view and print a copy at an FHC.

Other than that I'd guess that your only other option would be to visit Nottinghamshire Archives and get a (much cheaper but not free) copy in person.

Cost of travel etc could likely make that £11 seem good value though :-)

It is recorded as Bonnett on Free Reg.

There is an oppurtunity to report an error. Perhaps you can ask them to check the original record entry.

If (as is highly likely) the transcriber has followed the rules and typed exactly what they see in the document it is not an error and will not be amended in FreeReg.
