Clark(e) of Essex
« on: Wednesday 11 August 21 11:46 BST (UK) »
I really need help on this one. I have a George Clarke on both the 1841 and 1851 census. This is what I have:

1851
Living in Chapel, Bentfield End, Essex
Occupation is a horse dealer and vitualler
Living there:
George Clarke Head 1802 in Stansted
Susanah Clarke (possibly nee Rix) wife 1798 in Litton, Norfolk
(If Rix she was b in Litton, Norfolk)
Caroline Warner b 1838 niece
1 servant, 1 ostler, 3 lodgers

1851
Living in Chapel, Bentfield End, Essex
Occupation a publican
Living there:
George Clarke Head b 1801 in county
Susanah Clarke wife b 1800 in county no
Betsy Levy b 1779 in county
*Henry Houghton b 1821 in county (ostler)

No further census for George.

I found a death for a George Clarke in 1856 in Farnham, Essex (not familiar with Farnham) in 1856 which led to a baptism of George Clarke in 1801 in Farnham- no doubt these go together but what I don't know is if they are the same George in the census.

You will notice I gave Henty Houghton a * in the second census. This is because he is the grandson of a Henry Houghton  b in 1769 in Rickling his mother was an unmarried Elizabeth Read and his putative father was a Thomas Houghton  most likely of Little Hallingbury, Essex. This Thomas went on to marry a Susannah Hammond and one of their daughters married a Henry Clarke from Takeley, Essex.

So I really need to link George Clarke to Henry Clarke. Any help on this would be most appreciated. Thank you in advance M

You have not said where/when Henry Clarke was born.
Does he appear on 1841/1851 Census?

Caroline WARNER was bapt 11 May 1838 Bishop's Stortford, Herts to SAMUEL/MARY
(Sam a Carpenter)
He married Mary RIX    10 Jan 1828 Bishop's Stortford. Mary of Harlow, Essex Parish

I'm really sorry as far as I am aware Henry Clarke came from Takeley c 1755 but this is just as in his will dated 1829 it says "of  Takeley" he is buried in Little Hallingbury.

Thank you for the information on Caroline Warner - so it was Susanah Rix and she is a niece on her side.

Thats ok I just wanted to get a time frame.

1841/51/61 there is a Farmer Henry Clarke living in Takeley.
1861 born c 1792 Little Hallingbury, Essex

His bapt is on FreeREG 8 May 1792 to HENRY/SUSANNA Clark
(likely Susanna HEMPSON married 21 May 1790)

I thought this may have been to Henry you were looking for so thanks for clearing it up :)

Thank you. From the will Henry's eldest son inherited the Takeley farm he was b c1796 in Takely d 1868 in Little Hallingbury he is the son of Susannah Houghton and I want to link the two Clarke families to link the two Houghton families to ensure I have the right line. I have not seen the census but this would be a great find.

Susanah Houghton would possibly have been the half second cousin to Henry the Ostler living with George Clarke.

Incidentally George's wife turns up in Bishops Stortford as owner of a pub which had once been owned by Susannah Houghtons grandfather. All the clues seem to be there I just cannot make the connection.

Thank you once again M

Sorry got to sign out as its late here in Sydney.
I will look over what you have posted tomorrow when I'm back on here.

FreeREG has the 1801 bapt of George you mention in Farnham
His likely Parents Marriage 1798 (+ siblings)
+ possible Bapt for William there 1776, Father JOSHUA, Mother MARY
Joshua Burial 13 Jul 1796 age 51

Hopefully someone else can help you more :)

According to John Houghton’s will dated 1829, Thomas Houghton (father to Susanna who married Henry Clarke in 1790) had a brother James who had a daughter Elizabeth who also married a Clarke.  Have you looked into this Clarke family?

No I have not looked at those Clarkes. I have found John's will but haven't had a chance to look. This is turning out to be very interesting- I wonder who she married. Thank you this is amazing - I think James was the youngest brother and I seem to remember he may have lived in Manuden, Essex M
