Dunfermline missing birth registers for Wellwood
« on: Saturday 14 August 21 14:19 BST (UK) »
Hi, does anyone know what might have happened to the birth register in Dunfermline between 1800 - 1830 (approx)?

Searching on SP for Wellwood between 1800 - 1830 and only 3 results are returned, 2 in 1800 and 1 in 1827. Considering the number of Wellwoods in the town and surrounding area there must have been more children born at this time.

Has anyone else found a strange gap like this?

Could well be due to missing/destroyed Old Parish Registers over the years. Pre the start of official registration, it can be a hit and miss affair unfortunately.

There are almost 10,000 entries in the Dunfermline baptism registers 1800-1830 and there don't appear to be any years missing.

Yes, it's odd. No years apparently missing but there are a couple of members of my direct ancestors who were married around 1800-1810 and lived in Dunfermline but who seem to remain childless until 1827

The majority of WELLWOOD  children baptised before 1800 were female.  Which males would you expect to see having children baptised?  Not everyone baptised their children.

That could be the reason. I'm expecting to find:

David Wellwood, born 1800-1810 to William and Margaret
William Wellwood, born circa 1811 to William and Mary (though possibly born in Ireland)

plus children of James and Helen, married in 1812

Yes, William Wellwood & Margaret Marshall - they are getting on a bit by this point and have 8 other children, the last registered as Robert in 1800.

But my g-g-grandafather David is born between 1800-1811 (various census' and death cert have a 10yr variation in his age) and his parents are William Wellwood and Margaret Marshall in Dunfermline. So that seems the best connection...

Twins

ROBERT WELLWOOD           WILLIAM WELLWOOD/MARGARET MARSHALL
18/05/1800
JANET WELLWOOD              WILLIAM WELLWOOD/MARGARET MARSHALL
18/05/1800

JAMES  18/07/1784

RACHEL 10/12/1786

SUSANNA 20/12/1789

MARGARET 12/04/1795

WILLIAM  12/01/1783

MARY 15/07/1792

Odd there is no birth of a David anywhere by any Wellwood and variants in the OPR's.  I see from his death he is 74 in 1874 and wonder if they decided to call Robert - David.
