Searching the Tithe Applotment records
« on: Monday 16 August 21 08:15 BST (UK) »
As most probably know, it is super hard to get any info early 1800's and before. I thought I would try to search the Tithe Applotment records to see if anything could be helpful in them. I browsed by location, but all that was under Down was Maghera and Drumgooland. I am wondering if this is really all that is on record for Down or is it only what has been digitised?
I am looking for any McComiskey/McComisky in Downpatrick to be specific. I heard that only land valued at 3 pounds and higher were included in these records. I believe at least one of my g-g-g-g uncles' had cattle and thought they could have been on the records.
Any tips or info to point me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.
TIA

Are you searching the PRONI Tithe Applotment records?
https://www.nidirect.gov.uk/services/search-pronis-ecatalogue

There are 76 civil parishes in county Down.
https://www.townlands.ie/down/

Tithe Applotments look-up method
Go to PRONI e-Catalogue.
When you reach the e-Catalogue, select the option to Browse on the top right-hand corner of the page.  In the search box enter FIN/5, which will bring up a list of 58 entries in the FIN series.  Click on FIN/5 and you will be brought to a page of 22 entries in the FIN/5 series.   Click on FIN/5/A on the second page of results which will bring you to a list of 317 results.  These are the Tithe Applotment Books for each parish, in alphabetical order. When you find the parish you are seeking, click on the view option in the right-hand column and a pdf image of the book for that parish should open in a new tab.  Be aware that these are very large files and may take a minute or more to download and don’t try to open or download them if you have limited data.  If you don’t find the parish you are looking for, continue to explore the FIN/5 series.

the 3 listed in Demesne of Down are my people! thank you, it's been really hard to locate the Downpatrick list. I thought I found it, but it was really had to read as it was a hand written file. but I don't think it was the one I needed. But looks like only these 3 are listed, none of the other locations have ever come up attached to any of my ancestors records.

I had been looking at them through the national archives! Did realise Proni had more. I searched what you suggested, but it seems to bring up everything FIN with all numbers, some 5 and extra numbers. It doesn't seem to have just 5A - there are more numbers attached to them. I will just have to go through each of them. I could be doing something wrong  ??? Idk
Thanks for your help

Thank you, I think I found a few other people from my family tree and spouses and occupations for them. An interesting looks at the town and surrounding areas too.

The list I posted should reflect every McComisk(e)y recorded under County Down in the Tithe Applotment Books.

The earliest newspaper reference I could see that might be related, was this death announcement in the Belfast Commercial Chronicle of 18 December 1839: 'On the 10th inst Mr Hugh McComisky, of Downpatrick, aged 70 years, much regretted by his friends and aquaintances.'

There's also the following inscription with comments in Ulster Historical Foundation records for the Down Church of Ireland (Downpatrick) graveyard, I don't know if related or not: 'Erected in memory of Hugh McComisky and the deceased members of his family by his son Robert McComisky [Several more lines are too worn to read] [Worn tablet of c 1820 on a pointed topped vault]'.

Oh yes, this is one of my g-g-g-g grandfathers. He is about the earliest generations I have details for. I don't think I have seen the newspaper obituary, but the thing erected in memory is a family mausoleum. Quite a large gothic style one.
I was hoping to find this Hugh McComisky's parents if possible. I think I have a name of his father at least but not much else. Is it likely there are parish records for church of ireland for this time period? (Late 1700s - early 1800s)
