red ink notes on census
« on: Saturday 28 August 21 09:27 BST (UK) »
Many thanks in advance - hoping someone can tell me about the numbers written in red ink to the right side of census information.  I remember this coding was added at a later date but cannot for the life of me remember what the numbers are in relation to and where to find an index of what the different numbers mean.

Kind regards

Many thanks to you both for your replies.  Exactly what I needed.
I will record this in my little info book so I don't need to enquire next time I have a mind blank!
Kind regards

Cheers!
Also, just in case you want to bookmark it, as Gadget says there are area codes too  :)

(though I'm not sure that these are the codes on Gadget's snip  :-\ )

I think the Scottish codes might be different from Eng&Wales, Maddy, as the censuses were separate. The occupational codes are likely to be the same. Husband, who did a big study in Scotland in  the 1970s , says that they were slightly different in the earlier ones*.

The actual marks, etc. would be occupational, industrial and area, district, etc. codes.

I'll see if I can find them but not promising. Maybe Google 'Scottish census coding schemas'

Hi
Again many thanks for your help, Scottish ones would also be helpful.  I am discovering that often it is about using a particular key word when researching!
Hoping you are successful in finding the info.
Kind regards

I think I meant for you to do the search as it was you wanting to know.

PS - of course they could just be tally marks.
