Joseph Joslin 1868
« on: Wednesday 01 September 21 15:39 BST (UK) »
I’m working on the ancestry of my Grandfather
My grandfather’s details on his wedding certificate (original that I inherited from my grandmother) are as follows:
Married: 30 Nov 1918 @ St Andrews Church, Cobham, Surrey, England
Joseph Joslin, age 50, bachelor, father’s name John (deceased)
Margaret Lilly Wright , age 41, widow, father’s name William (deceased)
I have worked out the history of Margaret Lilly who was born Runnegar 26th Jul 1877.

I also have a copy of the undertakers’ receipt from Joseph Joslin’s funeral which indicates he died on 3 Feb 1940 at Dorking Hospital age 71 and was returned to his residence at 7 Randells Cott, Old Common, Cobham, Surrey, prior to burial at Cobham Cemetery. This is confirmed by the entry in BMD register.

The 1939 registration gives Joseph and Margaret living at 7 Randells Cottages, Cobham, Surrey and gives Josephs date of birth as 20 Aug 1868 and Margaret's as 26th Jul 1877.

The 1911 census gives a Joseph Joslin age 42 living at Copse Road Cobham Surrey as a boader.
The 1911 census also gives Margaret Lilly Wright (nee Runegar) living at Hill Cott Cobham Surrey. This is in close proximity to Copse Road.
This strongly suggests that the Joseph Joslin in the 1911 census is my grandfather and if so gives me birth place of Little Hadham in Herts

I am unable to trace Joseph Joslin any further back a 1911 in either census or birth registrations.

The closest birth record I have found is Joseph Thomas Josling Q3 1867 (B Stortford 3a 251).This individual would be up to a year older than my grandfather, but may be a relation
Thomas Joslin was living with the "Williams Family" at the Ford, Little Hadham as a boarder in both 1871 and 1881 Census age 3 and 13 (RG10  Piece:  1355  Folio:  204  Page:  25 and RG11 1407 95 25)
Thomas Joscelyn married Alice Martin (Sep 1889: B Stortford 3a 585) and the 1891 census gives Thomas Jascelyn of the correct age living at the Ford, Little Hadham with his wife Alice and two children.(RG12; Piece: 1098; Folio 170; Page 4)
In Q1 1899 Alice married Arthur CUNDALL (B. Stortford 3a 567) and was living with the two original children at the 1901 census
A Thomas Jocelyn died Q4 1891 at the age of 24 ie born about 1868 (Hertford 3a 295). Admittedly this is Hertford district and not Bishop Stortford, but this would account for Alice remarrying in 1899. I also can't find any occurrence of a second Thomas Jocelyn in earlier census.

I would be grateful if some kind person could inspect any parish records for both Joseph and Thomas for any details of baptism.
Any other suggestions as tohow to progress Joseph would be very welcome

Welcome to RootsChat

Looking at Parish Records on F M P there is a burial record for Thomas Jocelyn age 24 on 20 Oct 1891 at Little Hadham which would fit with the Thomas Josling/Joscelyn despite the death being registered in the Hertford Reg District

In the GRO Birth Index Joseph Thomas GJosling's birth shows no mother's maiden name so presumably his mother was unmarried and sadly I can't see any baptism records for Joseph Joslin or Joseph Thomas Josling with variations of the surname.

Working on the basis of the 1911 census being a good possiblity with a birth place as Little Hadham the only Joslin/Jocelyn family that I can see in Little Hadham is below in 1871 living in Little Hadham and mistranscribed as Goslin

Joseph Goslin    60    Blacksmith Journeyman b Little Hallingbury Essex
Sarah Goslin 52  b Matching Essex
Isabella P Goslin 5 Granddaughter b Little Hadham
Charles Goslin 16    Son b Braughing Hertfordshire

The granddaughter Isabella was baptised in Little Hadham on 5 May 1865 as Isabella Phoebe Jocelyn with mother Emily

I think this is the family in 1851 living at Thorley Street Cottages, Thorley Street, Thorley, Bishops Stortford although the surname is so badly written it was a miracle it is transcribed as Joselyn

Joseph Jocelyn   40   Black smith   Essex
Sarah Jocelyn   32   Essex
Emily Jocelyn   11   Essex
Joseph Jocelyn   7   Essex
Frederick   Jocelyn 3   Hertfordshire
Francis John Jocelyn   0 Thorley, Hertfordshire

I can't see Emily post this census but given Isabella's birth was registered, she was baptised and looked after by her grandparents it looks unlikely that a second illegimate child would not have had similar treatment  :-\

Apologies that this doesn't take you any further forward but I will continue to fiddle. There is always the possibilty of a name change.  He might have been registered under his mother's surname and it may be useful to look at other Josephs born in the Sept and Dec Qtrs 1868 in Bishops Stortford Reg District.   I noticed a Joseph Hale who was registered in the Dec Qtr 1868
JOSEPH   HALE mother's maiden name  SMITH  GRO Ref 1868  Dec Qrtr BISHOP STORTFORD UNION  Volume 03A  Page 256
and a baptism on 27 Sep 1868 at Little Hadham with parents John and Eliz and I can't see him post 1881 :-\

Many thanks for this.
The burial of Thomas at least "puts him to bed" is to his connection to Alice.

I've downloaded all the Joslins and soundex equivalents for 1871 to 1911 census to inspect and there seems no obvious candidate for Joseph.

My next plan is to try and trace all 1911 Joslins etc back to 1871 or births just to eliminate them, but I suspect all this will confirm is that I don't know.

I note that Little Hadham is near Essex and there seems to be a lot of Joslins in Essex so maybe that is my next port of call

I fear you may be correct about Joseph being registered under is mother's name, but no idea when he changed to Joslin. It would seem to be between 1901 and 1911, possibly when he moved to Cobham.

I suspect he may have been too old to serve in WW1. He as in UK to marry in Nov 1981. I do have a photo of Joseph circa 1930 and has no obvious disabilities so unlikely to be an early discharge if he did serve.

Again my thanks and anything else you can come up with would be welcome

have you thought to order the birth cert of the Joseph Thomas to see what the date of birth of that child is? It's not unknown for the day & month to be correct on later records but the year to be out, especially when married to a younger/older spouse.
