Who was Mary GADSBY: died Cottingham May 1885
« on: Thursday 02 September 21 13:20 BST (UK) »
In my research of the Tansley family, I have been following a Joseph Pant(h)er - one of the 19(!) children of Edward Panter and Elizabeth Tansley. Born in 1821, his first marriage to Elizabeth Foode in 1844 was short lived (she died in May 1846). He married again to Lucy Gadsby from Wodenhoe near Thrapston in 1852. They lived in Church Street Cottingham where they had 6 children.

I have records from St Mary Magdalene Churchyard which shows that Lucy was buried there on June 20th 1888 and Joseph joined her there on May 25th 1894.

However, there was an occupant in that grave before either of them. On May 15th 1885, 65 year old Mary GADSBY was buried there. Dispite searches on FindMyPast and A'try I have been unable to find this lady and hence show a relationship to Lucy.

Help would be gratefully received

Many thanks - Alan

When was Lucy born and do you know who her parents were?

In case Mary was her mother.

Lucy was baptised in Wadenhoe on November 30th 1823. Parents: Samuel Gadsby and Hannah Pettit. No Mary attributable to them around 1820 which could have made her Lucy's sister.

It just strikes me as very odd that someone with no apparent history in the village could be the one to open up a new grave.

Searching for an Ann Gadsby (fuzzy matching) civil death in England just brings up the one:

There is a burial record
Mary Gadsby, 65 yrs - Cottingham May 15th 1885
Death registered June quarter 1885 Kettering

Perhaps you will have to purchase the death certificate.

Samuel and Hannah Gadsby did have a daughter Mary baptized at Wadenhoe, 11 Aug 1816.
Has she been eliminated?

I had seen Mary Gadsby of Wadenhoe, 1816, but haven't been able to reliably trace her after that. There is no evidence of her in the census returns for Cottingham.

I will obtain a copy of her death certificate as it may show the address where she died, confirm that she was indeed a spinster, and who the informant was.

May not be relevant, but there are two entries on the 1871 and 1881 for a Mary Gadsby, china dealer, born in Northamptonshire:-

1871 - Allen Road, Hornsey, Edmonton, Middlesex, unmarried, b 1822 in Northampton.
1881 - Allen Rd Shop, 42, Hornsey, Edmonton, Middlesex, a widow, b 1822 in Northamptonshire. The birth town/village is not transcribed but looks as though it starts with Wad*****.

I am glad you posted that David.
I saw the 1881 census yesterday but couldn’t find her in 1871.
I have searched today with your information and still can’t spot her. Do you have the reference for 1871 please?
