William Smith - 71st Regiment of Foot
« on: Monday 06 September 21 08:23 BST (UK) »
Hi,

William Smith (my gg grandfather) was born in Scotland in approx 1788. I currently have no other details, however he was married on 29 Nov 1819 at St Martin, Chester to Catharine Jenkins. The marriage details say he was a Corporal in 71st Regiment of Foot.

They had there first child in 1820 who died in 1824 and then other children born from 1827 onwards at regular intervals - presumably after he left the army.

I am trying to find more information of his army life before and after marriage - any help would be much appreciated.

Many thanks

Alan

I don't think it is the 71st regiment.  On the marriage, it looks like 74th or 76th (corrected)

If it is 71st, They fought at Waterloo in 1815 and were sent to Canada in 1824

Hi,

Thanks for your comments - I am fairly sure it was the 71st as they were in Chester in late 1819 which ties in with the November marriage. The regiment was inspected by Major-General Sir John Byng at Weedon on 1 May 1819 and then on 21 June 1819 marched to Chester and then marched on to Rochdale in June 1820.

It seems the 74th were in Canada and 76th in North America at the time.

Can I ask Tikketyboo if he could post the whole of the original marriage record and not just the snippet as I currently do not have a copy.

Many thanks

Alan

I'm sorry but  we aren't allowed to post full images of records in here. I just posted the snippet (which is allowed) so people could, if needed, offer opinions on which Regiment he was in.

Thanks for the info - I didn't realise.

Can you tell me how I can get a copy (was it from Find my Past?)

Hi,

Found it - many thanks - on family search there are 6 marriages on the images on page 99 (of 675 pages). Interestingly 4 of those 6 marriages involved persons from 71st Regiment of Foot and there are at least 4 more on pages 98 and 100.

A bit of a marriage epidemic!!

There is a William Smith born c1784 in Tannadice (I think), Forfar.  He was enrolled into the 6th Royal Veterans Battalion at Inverness on 25 Dec 1819 & served until 27 May 1820, but before that he had been with the 71st Regiment for 3 years & 60 days (dates not given).

Dates etc would seem to fit, but this William was only a private in the 6th, and appears to have signed his name whereas 'your' William signed X at marriage.

The only other information, other than a description, is that he was a labourer, and written on the back is Brechin, Forfar, along with what looks like Apd 28 May 1820.  Ent Admd 7 Feb 1811.  No idea what that all means!

You don't say where their children were born, so I haven't been able to look at the 1820 baptism.
