Duncan Fergusson Born 3 AUG 1775
« on: Thursday 23 September 21 12:34 BST (UK) »
Hi All,

Hoping someone may be able to help me on this one. I have the above Duncan Fergusson born in Monzievaird & Strowan to parents Donald Fergusson and Grissal McEwan.

I have found Duncan on 1841 census at Easter Meigar, which gives his age as 60 (a bit out) a farmer with a daughter Jean aged 15.

On the 1851 census he is still at Easter Meigar but now with more or less correct age of 76, a farmer of 80 acres UNMARRIED, with daughter Jean 24.  (Also at the same place is his brother George 66, his wife Janet 56,their children Donald 28, Duncan 26, Catherine 22, Thomas 20, Janet 18, Grace 15, George 13)

After the 1851 census I can't find Duncan or his daughter Jean with any certainty.  There is a possible marriage for Jean Fergusson to Alexander McEwan in 1852 in Muthill & Monzievaird & Strowan but the marriage document does not help with regards to her parents names and if this is her I cannot find her on the 1861 census.

Anyone any ideas?

Thanks,
Audrey

Monzievaird Church burials only to 1852 Easter Meigar  no records there Then Statutory Registration from 1855

I cannot see a church death record anywhere for Duncan, so he may have died 1851 – 1855

Where was Jean born according to the 1851 census?

Jean McEwen, age 34, died, 1859, Muthill, father, Duncan Ferguson, Farmer (Deceased). Informant Husband, Alexander McEwen. No MMN listed.

A number of possible childrens births in Muthill, from 1855 to 1858. 2 very likely are Jean McEwen, 1856 & Duncan, 1858. Could not find any prior to 1855.

Hi All,

Not very good on this site as I don't appear to be able to reply to individual posts, maybe I'm doing something wrong:

Hi Colin, The daughter Jean was listed on the 1851 census as being born in Monzievaird & Strowan.  I know sometimes these are not accurate though.

I think you're right about the 1851-1855 death of Duncan.  His brother George wrote his will on 15 Oct 1855 so I am thinking that Duncan died sometime before that date.

I already had the valuation roll info for 1855 but had forgotten to add that earlier.

Hi Kloumann,

I will have a look at the link you sent tomorrow for the 1832 electoral register.

Yes, I have his brother George's will and death certificate for 1860 where to confuse everything the tenancy of the farm at Easter Meigar then goes to George's son Duncan, where he is until his death in 1896 but there is also a property in Muthill that seems to be in his name also in 1865 although it was left to his brother Donald with some provisos that I guess he didn't take or accept.

Wow, where did you find the information on Jean's death?  And what a shame no mothers maiden name listed as that surely means a dead end.  I will look again at children born in Muthill as I was really looking for a Jean and Alexander together in the 1861 census and not particularly taking notice of children.

Many thanks to both of you for the taking the time to help.

Audrey

You are doing very well on this site.

https://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk for Scottish BMD records and more.

When Jean married Alexander banns were likely read at Muthill l8/02/1852 & they married at Monzievaird 20/02/1852.  It was the one you considered.
