St Mary Bredin Canterbury
« on: Friday 24 September 21 22:14 BST (UK) »
I have found a marriage record from this church in 1675, but there is only a transcription available. The transcript is "copyright Dean and Chapter of Canterbury". I am wondering what the source of the record is - possibly the Bishops Transcripts?
Unfortunately the woman's surname is rather odd, and I can't track her down any further! (Elizabeth Fawell)

The age is slightly out, but there is a baptism of an Elizabeth Fowell, 20 Oct 1650, St Giles, Kingston Next Canterbury, daughter of Thomas and Ann.

Thank you both. I don't know how I missed that baptism - it must have been too late at night! Looking at the original, I am surprised it got transcribed at all, but it looks right. If I have the right William Hopkin, he was 3 years older than stated as well.

I think I am going with the other William, baptised Patrixbourne, because of continuing links with Kingston. There is a possible death there in 1714. I know this is not reliable, but the Kingston family tended to use the name without the final S, surprisingly so this early.

I think the Bishopsbourne William suits best as the name of father is Michell/Michael.
Both appropriate dialect spellings, back in the 17th century.Patrixbourne William's Father was John.

However! Parents of William, b. Patrixbourne were (probably) John and Anne, nee Butcher, married at Kingston 1634. Son Thomas b. Kingston 1635.
The William who started this, married 1675 at St Mary Bredin, was a yeoman of Kingston. His daughter Elizabeth married William Pay at Kingston in 1707, and I hope he is my ancestor!
P.S. I would really like to find out who this William Pay was and where he came from. There are trees on Ancestry suggesting he was born in 1685, but I can't find such a birth.

I think you can rule out William s/o Michael b.1646 Bishopbourne and died 1706 Chilham.

Will proved 1688, Michael Hopkins of Chilham, yeoman, to son William, son Mathew, daughter Sarah (wife of William Fox), son Michael and cousin Henry Hogbin…

Will proved 1706, William Hopkins of Chilham, to various members of the Fox family and brother Michael Hopkins ….
