John Gray born 28 MAR 1864 Keith (Grange?), Banffshire
« on: Thursday 30 September 21 17:29 BST (UK) »
Looking for John Gray born 28 MAR 1864.  I have seen birth listed as Keith, Banff and Grange, Banff.  Is the difference simply a choice by person recording?

His father was

James Gray
BIRTH 21 NOV 1833  Huntly, Aberdeenshire
DEATH 18 FEB 1912  125 High St, Aberlour, Banffshire, Scotland

His mother was

Janet Gray
BIRTH 28 MAY 1833  Keith, Banff, Scotland
DEATH 24 OCT 1915  Aberlour, Banff, Scotland

They were not related according to some reports.

We find the family in 1871 80 High Street, Aberlour, Banffshire, Scotland.  Nothing definitive after that.

A researcher reports death 27 MAY 1914  Largo, Fife, Scotland and has promised a supporting document but nothing thus far

Some others have suggested he was a chemist/ Pharmacist  and others a distillery worker.  Nothing definitive there.
One report based on a 1901 census has him working for his spouse at Lynwilg Hotel in Alvie.  Her maiden name seems to be Cumming as both that and Gray are on the document.  No success finding a marriage.

Naturally there are a number of Gray families in Aberlour and Keith area.
Dunbar, Clark,Bain, Lipp, Campbell, Pope, Barnard, Handcock, McAdams,Creath

Who reported his mothers death?

Have you checked SP & downloaded a copy of that death cert?  It's a very common surname.  The English 1891 has 3 x John Gray entries all b Scotland 1864/5.  The Scottish 1881 has 1 b 1863 Keith

Where you find two registrations for a birth in different places. Normally this means that the birth took place away from the parents' normal residence. Births have to be registered by law in the district that the birth took place. What was meant to happen (not always did) was the clerk in the district would liaise with the clerk in the district where parents normally lived to let them know that a birth for the couple had taken place elsewhere. A second registration with the same details would take place. It is obvious that this is what happened when reading the certs. Same info and inclusion of two addresses.

PS:  ;D I think I misunderstood your question... There is only one official reg for the birth and that is in Grange. They are only 3 miles apart and at one point (in the 1600s) Grange was considered to be in Keith - see www.familysearch.org/wiki/en/Grange,_Banffshire,_Scotland_Genealogy

Forfarian, here on RC, will have a perfect explanation of this  ;)

Is this a source for the John Gray, chemist http://libindx.moray.gov.uk/people/people_report_view.asp?REF_ID=NM067088

This marriage is on SP in Keith in 1888 if you want to check to confirm/discount. One census for them before Isabella's death:

John Gray 27 chemist b. Grange, Banffshire
Isabella Gray 25
Maria E Gray 1

Address: Kirkton, Largo, Fife

This is what you have referenced, just adding the detail here really.

In 1891 census John Gray, Chemist is with wife Isabella McWilliam and child Maria.
Isabella dies before next census.
In 1901 John is working as a Farmer and Hotel Keeper in Alvie and wife is now Mysie Cumming, and 2 more children.

So this would be the 1901 census entry with John Gray and his second wife?

John Gray 37 Hotel Keeper Farmer b. Gamrie
Mysie Gray 34 b. Alvie
Mary Ellan Gray 11 b. Fife, Largo...daughter from first marriage to Isabella McWilliam likely
Amy Cumming Gray 3
Mariread Gray 1
Marsalidh Gray 9 months
...and 4 servants

Address: Lynwilg Hotel, Alvie, Inverness

Just for interest, this looks to be the hotel https://canmore.org.uk/site/14876/lynwilg-hotel

I think the details for John Gray seem straightforward. You just need to check the marriage regs to confirm the details properly.

Some details relating to his eldest daughter here http://libindx.moray.gov.uk/people/people_report_view.asp?REF_ID=NM112175
