I'm sorry Bob I am not clear if John or Jane was born 1705, was it in Dumfries?

From this, Jane looks to have been born c. 1741? http://originofthekirbys.com/tree/Origins/family/F87/John-Armstrong-Jane-Carlyle

13. Erected in memory of Wm. Currie s/o Capt. Thomas Currie in H.E.I. Hon. East India Company Service who d. 6 Jun 1801 age 12 yrs also Jane Carlyle spouse to John Armstrong in Pokesking and grandmother to the above Thomas Currie wo d. 3 Dec 1841 age 71 also John Armstrong of Pokesking who d. Dec 1845 age 87 yrs

From this, John Armstrong born c. 1758? Much younger than Jane Carlyle if her birth year c. 1741? Or, is this John Armstrong of Pokesking, son of John Armstrong and wife Jane Carlyle?

castlebob, you are the expert in all things Armstrong  ;D

Who died on 3 Dec 1841 aged 71 - was it Jane or her grandson Thomas Currie?

I was confused with that too, Forfarian! I think on consideration that it might be referring to Thomas Currie. Have to say, I am not getting the order and accuracy of birth years etc for the family!

Many thanks everyone,
The 1758 date fits with what I found in my notes. I believe John b1758 to be a brother of the Laird of Kirtleton - 1760-1828.
However, one will suggests he was from a previous generation.
Cheers,
Bob

There is a will of a Captain Thomas Currie HEICS who died in 1802, intestate. His wife Jane was appointed executrix.

If John Armstrong died in 1845, he should be in the census? And the person who died on 3 December 1841 ought also to be there.

Hate to state the obvious, but if John was b 1758 and the Laird was b 1760, then John was older, not younger, than the Laird.
