Hi all,

I have a Richard Bathe who married Mary Head in Highworth 23-7-1797. He is recorded as being a "widower" at the time so can anyone find who his first wife was?

I believe he was bapt. about 1760 Wilts but can't seem to find his entry or who his parents were.

I have seen several trees on Anc..y saying his parents were  Richard Bathe & (his 2nd wife) Mary Newport also in Highworth but can't be sure they are correct.

With so many "Bath(e)"s around I'm having difficulty in following their  ancestry.

Can anyone offer assistance please?

Marriage of Richard Bathe of Ashbury Berkshire to Mary Newport of the parish 20 June 1779 at Highworth. Witness Benjamin A? and John Williams (he signs a lot of entries)

Neither Richard or Mary could write and there is no mention of him being a widower.

I checked other pages and the clergy or parish clerk made sure to enter by banns or license and other entries have widow or widower no designation is made if they are single. So my guess would be they were both single. Mary is a possible first wife.

Just found an account book entry (listed as Banns) it says Richard Bathe of Ashberry Berkshire, batchelor and Mary Newport of Sevenhampton, the fee was 2 shillings and six pence.

You need to look in Ashbury/Ashberry Berkshire for his baptism.

The second marriage 1797 says both were of Sevenhampton when they married.

Burial at Highworth Richard Bathe of Sevenhampton 20 November 1819 age 62 so born circa 1756/57

Ashbury is a village and large civil parish at the upper end of the Vale of White Horse. It was part of Berkshire until the 1974 boundary changes transferred it to Oxfordshire. The village is centred 7 miles east of Swindon in neighbouring Wiltshire. The parish includes the hamlets of Idstone and Kingstone.

Hi all,

Thank you for your help.

I have now found a bapt. of Richard Bath 11-2-1756 Swindon -  Christchurch with St.Mary -  the s/o Nicholas & Hannah.

Perhaps the above Richard  firstly married Mary Newport (1779 - died 1794 Highworth) & then married Mary Head in 1797, hence the "widower" entry.

Seems all to fall into place now.
