Hillhead of "Crosley(?)" in the parish of Fetteresso
« on: Friday 22 October 21 13:19 BST (UK) »
Hello there,

Does anyone know where this place is/was please?

My 4x great grandad John Lamond (named "Lamont" on the '51 census), was at this address during the 1851 Census.

He was there with wife Christian/Christina, and children William, Margaret, Mary, John and Ellen. His other children not in the home during this census were Ann and James.

His daughter Margaret, my 3x great married George Sector at Fetteresso on the 23rd of April 1857. For Margaret's residence at the the time of marriage it is written "Crofkey/Crosley" (it's hard to read which), in Fetteresso.

Ann, the daughter of John Lamond, married William Lawrie at Maryculter on the 11th of February 1858. The residence at the time of marriage for Ann, from Scotlandspeople website, was also Crofkey/Crosley.

John Lamond was living at Cookney by the time of the 1861 Census.

Any information would be gratefully accepted.

Thank you very much. :) ;)

Hillhead of Crossley is in the same enumeration district as Lairhillock, Quocies, Rothnick, Stripeside of Crossley, Sauchenshaw and various other small farms and crofts. They are all north-west of Stonehaven.

I can't be sure exactly which croft was Hillhead of Crossley.

See https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/#zoom=15&lat=57.05782&lon=-2.22242&layers=5&b=1&marker=57.05983,-2.20690

Some modern photos of the area at https://www.geograph.org.uk/gridref/NO8696 and https://www.geograph.org.uk/gridref/NO8796 - since the map was drawn the Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route has been built through the area - click on the map to enlarge it and see where the new road goes.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.
