Did William Pollock b.1843 emigrate to the US?
« on: Thursday 01 September 05 13:16 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I am trying to find out if an old family story has any truth in it, but as this is my first time at looking for a possible emigrant, I'm not really sure where to start looking. I hope somebody can help:

I am trying to find out if a William Pollock b. 1843 (most probably in Glasgow, Scotland), emigrated to the US. According to a family story, he was a widow at a very young age, and, leaving his children in the care of a lady in his native Scotland, he went to find a new life in the US.

I am not entirely sure of the years, but I know it must have been after JAN 1871 and most probably before 1893. In Scotland his occupation was a carpet maker and then a hairdresser, though I don't know what his occupation was just before he left. I assume he boarded a ship from Glasgow, though it is possible (though less likely) that he went from Northen Ireland.

He may have remarried in the US, and had another family, this is what I am keen to find out.

Hope somebody can help,
millerina

I found a William Pollock in the 1870 Census. He was living in Belleville, St Claire County, Illinois. He was 28. He was living  with David Pollock and his family who also came from Scotland.  Did William have a brother?  David was 35. William was a coal miner. In the 1880 Census there is a William Pollock living in Clearfield County, Pennsylvania. He is married and his wife's name is Emma. Their children are as follows: Alex-11,Mary8,Jennie 6, William 3, Elizabeth 1/12.

After further searching I found William Pollock arriving in New York on  19 Aug 1868 on the City of Paris. He was 24.

Pabird,

Thank you so much for looking, unfortunately though I don't think that the first one can be my William, my GtGt Grandad was born in 1871 in Glasgow, and it gives an address for William in Glasgow for 1871. I think he was widowed in the mid 1870s, and I'm not sure how soon after that he went to the US, so if he was on a US census it would be either 1880 or 1890.  I shall try and research about the one in Pennsylvania though, so thank you very much for your help.

Best wishes,
millerina
