Looking for Mary Ann Horigan, b. ca. 1842 Kerry
« on: Wednesday 03 November 21 12:23 GMT (UK) »
Mary Ann Horrigan marries 25-12-1862 in London with William Bowman. According to census records, Mary Ann was born around 1842 in Kerry, Ireland. I am totaly unfamiliar with Irish genealogy and would be grateful if one of you could tell me when and where Mary Ann was born and who her parents were. Thank you.

Do you have her marriage certificate? That would help with her father’s name.

There is a published tree with minimal information which has father as Eugene.

Civil registration birth records  did not begin until 1864 so you would need a parish record. Do you know her religion?

I agree with Heywood that Mary Ann's marriage certificate would be of help, giving the father's name and occupation.

IF it WAS Eugene -- which is showing on an Ancestry Family Tree (so cannot be relied upon!) -- there is a Eugene O'Horgan marrying a Joanna O'Cahill on 10th Dec 1841 in an RC Marriage in Tralee, County Kerry - on the Roots Ireland website.

Are these christian names used for any of Mary Ann's children?
Just remember this is pure speculation at the moment -- and her marriage certificate is definitely needed as concrete evidence of her father's name.

Linking to Pennines findings.
Here are records the Catholic parish of Tralee. There are indexes on some paid sites.
https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0680

Baptism:
Tralee 22nd August 1842
Marian Horgan - parents Eugene O Horgan and Joanna O Cahill. (They entry shows ‘O’ in their names, I think but not transcribed as such in the index.

Added
I think the difficult here is that the Latin record looks like ‘Mariam’ which is Mary. From my Latin from a long time ago, the accusative case of Maria as she is the one being baptised.

As I added in an earlier post, that baptism could be Mary not Mary Ann.
Other trees show different parents so it is essential to get the certificate.

Great finds Heywood!

If only we knew whether or not it's the right father. Aren't the actual registers so difficult to decipher - the transcribers worked really hard on these.

Thank you all for your kind help!
I will order the marriage certificate, as suggested. I waited with ordering this in view of the price of UKL 11.00. (I am a Dutchman, and spoiled by the availability of Dutch birth, marriage and death certicicates of the period 1813-1921 for free, online.)

Oh Nicholaas - I am so sorry about our costs. You are very lucky to get such things free.

However it is the only definitive proof you will have of Mary Ann's father's name - and you really need that in order to be sure of having at least the correct father.

Do you know how to order?

https://www.gov.uk/general-register-office

If you haven't ordered anything before, you will need to register first, then go to 'order certificates on line'. You will need the reference numbers shown on the marriage registration details - which can be found on FreeBMD for Mary Ann's marriage.

Good Luck!
