Stanley Street, Clydebank and Store Gate, Old Kilpatrick
« on: Monday 08 November 21 22:06 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone tell me where Stanley Street is/was in Clydebank? Also Store Gate in Old Kilpatrick.
Both these places were on the 1901 census but I can‘t find them on any maps.
Would be really grateful if anyone could help.
Thanks in advance.

Mags,

The attached map (https://maps.nls.uk/view/82874370) shows Stanley Street, which no longer exists.

I don't know if you are familiar with Clydebank but, if you find the Forth and Clyde Canal running E-W through the centre of the map, follow its route west until you get to Kilbowie Road.  Go north on this road for a short distance to Livingstone Street (on the right).  Stanley Street is the second street on the right, and ran N-S from Livingstone St. to the canal embankment.

The locus of the street is now under the East end of what was Dunne's Store, (now the relocated Dunelm) within the Clydebank Shopping Centre.

I haven't managed to find the Old Kilpatrick address yet, but have a suspicion that it may have been in the vicinity of Erskine Ferry Road, where there were several sizeable industrial undertakings and a vehicular access bridge across the Canal

Hello Istrice,

Thank you SO MUCH for your help. I‘ve been searching for this address for months.
So my grandfather lived very near to the Singer factory where he worked as a cabinet maker - where he met my granny.
You’ve really made my day!
Thanks again,
Mags

Mags, the 1901 ref to Store Gate shows it as Mains Street Store Gate. So it likely it would have been located on the Main Street from that...not surprisingly  ::)

It also shows on most census years as Storegate. In 1861 it was referred to as 'Felsher's Land Store Gate'. This is from a transcript. The original image on SP might have it as Flesher's Land which makes more sense. This reference to xxx Land normally refers to a building rather than an area of land.

Fantastic website here www.awalkthroughthepast.org.uk/index.php for Old Kilpatrick. Their photo page includes a photo of Storegate (no.26 photo of 67). Just use your search and find for the word Storegate as they are not numbered to see.

Is it the whole building showing here I wonder? There are 15 households showing as living there in 1901.

Added: Probably not one building? Reference here to 13 houses:

The following properties were dealt with in that way : —
.........Storegate, Old Kilpatrick (13 houses);
Crichton’s Land, Old Kilpatrick (5 houses); and Burnside
Place, Old Kilpatrick (1 house).

Hello Monica,
A million thanks for all the information.
The photo of Store Gate gave me goose pimples - just the idea that my great grandfather might have lived in one of those houses all those years ago.

For the past couple of years I've been trying to build my family tree and have become quite obsessed with it, boring my family to bits with all my findings.
I've documented every tiny detail so now I probably know more about Clydebank than the 'Bankies' who live there today. What an amazing history.
I'll certainly read 'A Walk Through the Past'. It looks really interesting.

Thanks again Monica for all your time.

Best wishes
Mags

My grandparents lived in Storegate up until the time it was demolished and eventually replaced by the Glen Lusset. They moved all the way to Dalnottar Terrace.
I think there is another photo that was taken at the same time as the one posted. I'll have a look.

Regards, David
