Harry Barnes 1873 Great Somerford to New York (?)
« on: Sunday 21 November 21 14:23 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

Ancestry newbie here.

I am looking for a passenger list record for Harry Barnes, born 1873 in Great Somerford in Wiltshire England.

This would have been after 1902. We believe he went to the US and then onto Canada but it would be great to have this confirmed with a record.

Thanks so much.

There is a border crossing for Harry James Barnes, Oxford England - aged 46 years -  - a shell inspector - last permanent residence Hamilton Ontario arriving 12 September 1918 Niagara Falls New York.
The card states he arrived Newport News  - 12 April 1904 - on the SS Donne Castle.
Had been in the New York USA 1904 - 1912.

This looks like it could be him in 1905. He is a baker from Wiltshire, England.

Canada Passenger Lists: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:2HGB-JCN

I assume this is him in 1891/1901. In 1901 for Wiltshire, England, he is listed as a Journeyman Baker, born Little Somerford, Wiltshire.

1891 census: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:4VGZ-JMM

1901 census: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XSVT-YS4

This looks very likely as we did know he was a baker! Thank you so much!! ;D

Hi Sandra, this doesn't look likely (I think the post below is showing the right Harry Barnes) but thank you so much for taking the time to look for me, I appreciate it.  :)

Did Harry return to England? A tree at ancestry and one at familysearch both say he died in Salisbury, Wiltshire, in Dec 1933.
https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/LKWY-D66

Both trees also say he had two brothers who died in Crawford County, Illinois:
Franklin Benjamin Barnes (1871-1944) and Walter Barnes (1891 - 1929)

Yes that's right about the two brothers in Illinois. He was one of 8 and his 4 brothers all went over to the USA and he to Canada. We heard he worked there as a lumberjack.

We also believe he returned to the UK during WW1 and was in the 102 Canadian forestry corps stationed at Mortimer, Berkshire, England. Any record which shows this would be great. I have searched around the internet for these records but haven't found anything yet.

We aren't entirely sure if the death certificate showing Salisbury belongs to the right Harry Barnes. His whereabouts after emigrating to Canada are hazy so again if any record can help us to find out if he was still there later in life would help.
