Aug 1836 Death in Enniskillen or Devenish - Are Records Available?
« on: Monday 22 November 21 01:12 GMT (UK) »
I am hoping to find more information about the death of my 4X GR grandfather William TOUCHBURN aka TOUCHBURNE aka TICHBORNE (variations are endless) about August 19, 1836 in either Devenish where he was born about 1781 or Enniskillen and wondering if any records from parishes that far back still surive??

He had been in the 6th Inniskilling Dragoons and discharged in 1821.

Many thanks!

I assume he was Church of Ireland. If so, the following records exists for Devenish:

Baptisms, 1706, 1798, 1800-23 and 1828-73;
marriages, 1800-24 and 1829-61;
burials, 1801-22 and 1828-1939;

Enniskillen’s early records were lost in the 1922 fire but some bits and pieces survive:

Extracts of baptisms, 1667-1789,
marriages, 1668-1794,
burials, 1667-1781; 1879-1907 and
1941-50;

Extracts from baptism, marriage and burial registers, 1666-1826.

Printed copy of Old Enniskillen Vestry Book, with
extracts of births, marriages and deaths, 1666-c.1797.
Extracts from vestry minutes, 1666-1912, which
include some baptism, marriage and burial entries.

Copies of both parishes surviving records are held in PRONI in Belfast. Rootsireland has some coverage of Devenish’s records but the surviving Enniskillen ones are not on-line so far as I am aware.

Oh my! I didn't get any notification for this response and haven't been on here for months until today!

THANKS so much Elwyn!! I'm assuming he was Roman Catholic since he and Mary had all their children baptised in RC churches in Scotland.

Roman Catholic parish records are name indexed on Ancestry and entirely free on Findmypast. There are few Death records. Both use the free microfilm images on National Library of Ireland.

Enniskillen is https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0308
Baptisms from 1838. Marriages from 1818. No burials.
For Devonish there are only Baptisms from 1853.

There are some headstone transcriptions online on Fiindmypast 'Fermanagh Cemetery Records' [no listing for William] and RootsIreland https://www.johngrenham.com/records/graveyards.php?civilparishid=958&civilparish=Devenish&search_type=full

Jo_ni -- Many thanks for all of the information you've shared.

William Tuchburn / Touchburne was discharged from the 6th Inniskilling Dragoons in 1821-22 at age 40 so he married Mary Duffy (she was born Belfast) between 1821 and 1830 in Ireland which might mean I'll have some success in finding their marriage.

I'm glad other than William and his wife Mary (nee Duffy), all my other ancestors are in either England or Scotland where records are more plentiful  :)
