California Naturalization Records
« on: Tuesday 30 November 21 03:37 GMT (UK) »
My g-g-grandfather, Michael Cortez, immigrated to the United States from Chile in 1850. He settled in California during the Gold Rush, and mined there for many years. His census records show that he was naturalized as a US citizen 1 August 1892 in the Superior Court of Sierra County in California. He died 26 June 1912 in Sierra County, California. I would love to get a copy of his naturalization record, but have no idea where to find it. Does anyone know where these records are kept? Much thanks!

This link will provide guidance on which online records are available for California. I don't see anything for Sierra County, though. So you may need to contact a local county court office for that area. Perhaps one that has an Archives.

https://www.archives.gov/files/research/naturalization/419-online-naturalization-records.pdf

Something to consider: Would his name have been Miguel Cortez when he was Naturalised?
One of his many California Voter Registration records on Ancestry lists his name as Miguel Joseph Cortez.

This link will also provide info on available Sierra County genealogy records: https://www.familysearch.org/wiki/en/Sierra_County,_California_Genealogy

This has various links to California naturalization records.  https://www.germanroots.com/california.html  I don't know if any of these cover Sierra County.

In case it matters to you, early naturalization records contain very little information.  It will probably just include his name and the country he was from.
