Grappenhall Tannery's
« on: Wednesday 15 December 21 08:13 GMT (UK) »

Hi all,

just wondering if anybody could put me in the right direction for a possible list of Grappenhall Tannery's that were in business approx 1861 - 1877.  I am  looking for an establishment possibly situated on the canal bank.

Many thanks

There is a description of the tannery in
"First Report of the Commissioners Appointed in 1868 to Inquire into the Best Means of Preventing the Pollution of Rivers: Rivers Pollution Commission (1868). (Mersey and Ribble Basins.) Vol. II. Evidence"

Modified to add:
There is also another Tannery at Grappenhall on the Godley Brook owned by William Henry REYNOLDS.

Many thanks for your input, my gt gt grandfather John Martin (1823 -1918)  who was a canal boatman resided in Grappenhall in the 1870s with his family prior, to settling down in Barton Upon Irwell. From what i was told many years ago, during his time there, himself and his family actually lived next to a Tannery. On the 1871 census entry, the family are listed as living on Canal Bank, but i don't know if this residence was a cottage or indeed their actual narrowboat.
