Enoch Davies of LLAWEIN, Llangranog
« on: Friday 17 December 21 04:14 GMT (UK) »
Afternoon List

Have found an interesting piece of information in a Welsh newspaper of 1846 which says the following:

“Welshman” newspaper article 14th August 1846 -  TIVY AGRICULTURAL ASSOCIATION:   page 2.

BOUNTIES:  (there were others, but below has my interest)

To a Labourer who shall have brought up the greatest number of legitimate children without parochial relief to ENOCH DAVIES, LLANGRANOG.

This is my gggrandfather!!!   I was wondering if anyone knows what the 'bounty' would be for having all these kids who weren't on parish relief!.   ::)

Regards

There was another item in a newspaper that I assume you probably are aware of, in which the farm is named in relation to the death of one of the daughters of the family that had llived in the farm, but it also linked them to the family as having descended from someone with a different surname (Griffiths ?).

Hi Sam

No, I wasn't aware of that item of news...I only searched for Enoch of Llangranog and not of Llawein.  I'll have another look today as one of his daughters Mary married a Thomas Griffiths in 1842 so would be the same family.  Thanks for that info.  Yesterday when I tried the newspapers again - screen came up with a 'proxy server problem', so I will try again.

Thanking you

Hi Sam,  this info was wonderful....even mentioned my GGgrandfather - Captain Owen Davies, who was the Harbour Master in New Zealand until his death - after he left his career as a whaler out of Hobart Town!.
