Inhabitants of Cardington 1782
« on: Tuesday 21 December 21 13:39 GMT (UK) »
I wonder if someone is familiar with or has access to the Beds Historical Records Soc publication, 'inhabitants of Cardington 1782'. One of my ancestral families, the Hillyards were there around that time including x5 Great grandfather Samuel b c 1740 and wife Elizabeth (King I think). Just wondered what sort of info you can glean from the 1782 survey. Any info gartefully received especially in relation to Sam and family. His son James b 1769 will be my x4 GGrandfather.

Harrowden, Cottage no. 28

Occupier
Elizabeth Hillyard, widow, born at Barford, S.L., 53

Children
Dorothy, in London, 21
Martha, S.L. & J., 17
Edith, S.L. & J., 15
James, 12
Joseph, 9

(S.L. & J. means Spins Linen and Jersey)

The editors have guessed that this is the marriage of Samuel Hillyard, widower, to Elizabeth Watson, widow, both of Cardington, Jan 5 1762.
Other sources noted by the editors give them as tenants of Thomas Brimley, and as receiving relief in the overseer's accounts.

Great thanks Trish - Lots of detail ! I wish they'd done a few more of those surveys elsewhere - quite a resource. Wonder where I got 'King' from for Elizabeth - note to self - must keep better records. I'll check out Free Reg.
Thanks for the help

Thanks again Trish for the extra info

I think the picture building is of a family of an Elder Samuel, b 1718 who married Ann Fleming in 1739 who had 7+ children from 1740 to c 1760, including Samuel junior who was christened 1740. He appears to have married first Liz King in 1754, but secondly as a widower, Liz Watson (herself a widow) in 1762. Of their children that you list , my direct ancestor is James born 1769/70.

The Hillyards certainly look to be part of the desperately poor farm labourer sector of society for several generations. A grandson of Samuel junior  George - my GGG Grandfather was variously described as a pauper, ag lab and in 1851 a rat catcher - his wife being a lacemaker - I think another common occupation in the area around then.

Thanks again for the pointers.

Entry has note Banns only; absent from the Marriage Register.****

As per the Cardington PR transcript....
The banns date is 1 Jan 1764 & mentions Elizabeth King from Willington
So must be a typo on FreeReg (if that's where this came from)

The marriage was at Willington on 24 Jan 1764 & Samuel is from Cardington

If in 1782 Elizabeth Hillyard was a widow and her last child Joseph baptised 29/03/1772, can you find the death/burial of husband Samuel between 1772 & 1782 as I can't find it in Bedfordshire.

I also think that Samuel Hillyard widower who married Elizabeth Watson widow in 1762 is the one born 1718 who married Ann Fleming in 1739, as Ann died in Oct 1759, and its possible that they are the couple who baptised daughter Sarah on 3/10/1762 as its before the marriage of Samuel born 1740 to Elizabeth King.

Cheers John
