If you would like to give us a name and some details John we can have a look to see what there is.

I've been having a quick search for Patrick and Julia in the USA (1870 onwards) but they are very common names. So you really need something extra to go on. Probably a Naturalisation record for Patrick, etc.

The early naturalization records don't give a lot of information.  This is the type of information those early ones might give you :-
Surname - Residence
Birth date - Age
Date certificate issued
Court issued at - Petition or declaration number
Volume and page numbers
Former Nationality

The states whose records are currently included in the database  U.S., Naturalization Record Indexes, 1791-1992  are Alaska, California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Illinois, Louisiana, Maine, Massachusetts, Montana, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, New York, Tennessee, Washington, and Vermont.

Have you located the obituaries for Walter Lawless and Ellen Kavanagh Lawless to see if the mention her sister and husband ?

Sometimes families who immigrated stay in the same vicinity, have you scrolled thru the 1880 census to see if you see Patrick and Judy/Julia in Kankakee, Illinois, perhaps mistranscribed ?

Many thanks Sandra for the previous posts. I have quite a lot of info on the Illinois Lawless family, BMD certs, Census, newspaper Obituaries etc, but no mention of Patrick & Julie. I have spoken to older descendants of the Lawless family and again they have no recollection of them.... is a strange one.

The Lawless angle would be exhausted then.  :-\    What about the other siblings, have you traced those ?

Interestingly...there is a Julia Doyle (age 5 months) residing with Walter & Ann (sic) Lawless in the 1870 census in Kankakee, Illinois. Obviously relationships aren't given in the 1870 census, but could she be the daughter of Patrick & Julia? Her birthdate is Dec 1869. Birthplace: Illinois.
