JOHN MARTIN convict 1782
« on: Tuesday 28 December 21 03:36 GMT (UK) »
Hi Everyone I'm hoping firstly that I maybe able to find a mention in "The Times" possibly of the trial of John Martin (Negro) 3rd of July 1782 Middlesex, Old Bailey.

I have tried to find the original trial without success on the Old Bailey website.  I do have a transcription of the trial though.

John stole property from a STEPHEN TURNBULL and/or ?   John was sent to Newgate Prison for 4 months before being put on board the "Den Keyser" which was bound for Africa but he was returned to Newgate as he a contracted Typhus.  He was then stayed in Newgate Prison until 1785, then to the Hulk "Ceres" and finally sent to NSW on the Alexander-First Fleet 1788.

I'm hoping to find some information on him while he was in Newgate Prison or the Ceres Hulk as well or any snippets of interest.  Does anyone know where the records for Newgate Prison are kept please.

It is not known from the many researchers where John originated from.  Just that he was Black/Negro! living in and around London.  Any help or advice is very much appreciated.  Kind regards Dianna

Wow that is interesting. I have heard of that guy, similar to John Martin, not the same person though.

I'm sure the author Mollie Gillen did write something about JOHN MARTIN though from memory.  Hoping to find a snippet in "The Times" if possible!  Thank you as usual JM.  Regards Dianna
