I have James age 47 as Master of the Sloop Samuel No 2660, 34 tons, in 1871 at Goole, with him a boy William Atkin age 14, the age makes William his son. I have a William George baptised 3rd October 1858 the son of James and Elizabeth Atkin.

The 1891 census referred to in your opening post - Transcribed as written on the original entry

James Chas Atkin - Master - 34 - married - b Spalding
Thomas Tot. Atkin - Mate - 35 - married - b Spalding

Piece 3764 folio 178

If you check earlier censuses for James Charles Atkin - he did not have a brother Thomas (who was one of the subjects of your post).

You say you are trying to find info on “other Atkin mariners” for the great granddaughter of James Charles Atkin so presumably you are researching the ancestry of James Charles Atkin - not every unconnected mariner in Lincolnshire with the Atkin surname.

If that is correct -  we can concentrate on that particular line.

1871 has a 13yr old James C Atkin b Spalding - son of Rebecca - mariners wife.  Marriage of James Atkin & Rebecca Osborn was 1861.

James first wife Elizabeth Atkin nee Osborn died 1860

In 1861 Rebecca Osborn was his housekeeper - presumably Elizabeth’s sister.  Only children on 1861 entry are James C  aged 3 & Elizabeth 1

Son William George Atkin aged 5 is with his Osborn grandparents

CaroleW, I have all info of James C, just after finding a few others conected with him, his mother died after the birth of a fourth child and his father went away to Lynn and married her sister then had more children with her after then. His father James had brothers William, Robert & Joseph but I have little information about them,James C's father was also a mariner on the 'Samual' and also his uncle Joseph was Harbour Master of Spalding in 1881, the Thomas (Tot) will maybe remain a mystery as only seen him once in 1891 on the 'John'. Thanks for any help given

So neither James Charles Atkin or his father James Atkin had brothers called Thomas.  Perhaps he was the son of one of James’ brothers and therefore a cousin of James Charles??

Have you found Thomas on the 1901

Unless you research backwards from father James - at the moment there doesn’t seem to be any obvious connection to a Samuel Atkin apart from the surname

CaroleW, funny enough there is a connection in that James was the Master of a vessel, a sloop in 1860/64, 1871 & 1881 with the name 'Samuel' and there was a Samuel Atkin in a 1856 directory living in Commercial Road, Spalding and again in 1872 age 65. maybe a Uncle.

I seem to have come to a dead end as regards the Thomas (Tot) Atkin as I have not had anyone able to find him except for the entry on vessels at sea in 1891. Perhaps I can get help with another of the 4 brothers, sons of John Atkin, a Higgler in 1848 of Spalding. This one was William who was married to Elizabeth Sarah East on 28th August 1842, I can't find any other history of him so any help would be good, he may have been a mariner like his 3 brothers, Robert, Joseph & James.
