Coopers Lean - Campbell Land Bonhill 1871
« on: Saturday 08 January 22 20:42 GMT (UK) »
In the 1871 census, Helen Edmond is shown as living at Coopers Lean - Campbell Land Bonhill.  She appears to have lived her entire life in St. Ninians/Balfron area.  Trying to figure out why she would have moved to Bonhill.  At this point, she was a widow aged approx 50.  All her children still lived with her.  Is there any way to determine where this address was, and also if possibly any other members of her family (MS Davie) were also living there at the time.

Can't see anything so far to help you with the location of Coopers Lean - Campbell Land (there was also Coopers Lean - McFarlane it seems from the 1871 census).

Can't see it coming up on the Valuation Rolls around that time.

One thing you could do is to look at the original image on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk to see the street references that come up either side of this address on the page (you might have to click to view more than one page though...).

It's probably supposed to be Cooper's Lane.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

I have a copy of the 1871 census, which shows this family as schedule 209 living at Coopers Land/Campbell Land.  Schedule 210 and 211 are duplicates for other families.  Schedule 212 shows as The Manse Main St. (Bonhill Parish Church).  Does this mean that Coopers/Campbell land would be adjacent to Main St?

FindinFamily,

The following reference should take you to an 1859 plan of the relevant part of Bonhill ( https://maps.nls.uk/view/74415051 )
The plan shows Campbell Street running E-W near the north of the map, and a cooperage at the SW corner of the unnamed street just to the south of, and parallel to Campbell Street.  This street is named as Croft Street on later plans.

Immediately to the east of the cooperage there is an access from Croft Street leading to two adjoining properties, possibly tenement buildings or "lands".  These could potentially be the "Coopers Lane" and "Campbells Land" that you refer to, but without further historical information this can only be surmise.

The cooperage has long since vanished as have the original C19th tenement buildings.  The only remaining early 20th century tenement in the immediate area is at the corner of Croft St./George St. as can be seen on "Streetview"

You may find the information on the following site interesting (https://www.valeofleven.org.uk/bonhill3.html).  Paragraph 12 refers briefly to the cooperage.
