Hi everyone

Hitting a brick wall with research and looking for a bit of advice please!

I am looking to trace my great grandfather and his parents.

My great grandfather and his father left Glenties in 1899 for Scotland. His father died after landing in Scotland.

I have my great grandfathers Scottish wedding and death certs showing his parents names and his date of birth.

I have searched civil listings there are no birth, death or marriage records matching the names.

There are no census records surviving to check pre 1901 (they left Ireland in 1899).

I don't know the townland unfortunately only that they came from Glenties.

I searched the parish records that are online and can't see a record of birth, marriage or death.

At this stage im now wondering what options I have left for tracing? Are there any physical records that anyone know of i can check that my relatives might be on?

We need more information in order to help with further information or to suggest other sources.

Religion? What was his name, date of birth & names of parents?

If he was born before 1864 there will be no birth certificate and you'd need to see if church records survive.

His name was John Gallagher, RC, born 13/3/1887, father Denis (or Dennis) Gallagher, mother Margaret Gallagher nee Devlin.

That's all I have. I know he was from Glenties but I don't know the parish or townland unfortunately.

What is your source for Glenties being the place they left?

What is your source for 1899 being the year they left Glenties?

Sure, his father is listed as Denis Gallagher, Blacksmith, Deceased. His mother is listed as Margaret Gallagher nee Devlin, Deceased.

The source for Glenties is a family story. His date of birth is 13/3/1887. We were told he left Ireland aged 12.

Father's name spelled Denis however John's first son was named Dennis so I'm not sure if it's with one or two N's. John Gallagher married Catherine Kelly in 1909.

This is everything from the marriage cert.  MJohn Gallagher married Catherine Kelly in Edinburgh in1909, he was aged 22, occupation General Labourer, bachelor.

His father is listed as Denis Gallagher, Blacksmith, Deceased. His mother is listed as Margaret Gallagher nee Devlin, Deceased.

That's all the info from the marriage cert.

I understand its a story with no substance,  that's what I'm trying to discover.
