Do the witness names help?

Witness names are Lizzie Kelly, pottery worker (Catherine's sister) and John Stewart, General Labourer (a colleague of John's I presume)

How do you know they left in 1899 and that Denis died ‘after landing in Scotland’. Do you have a death certificate?
Is that a family story.

Family story they left when John was 12 which would be 1899. Family legend also states Denis died in a poorhouse. I have a 1901 census entry in the Craiglockhart poorhouse for Dennis Gallagher and a 1902 death cert for a Dennis Galocher (name poss transcribed incorrectly due to Donegal accent)

I saw those entries via a published tree but I think they both state Denis is a single man.
Of course, it is quite possible, that he presented himself as such or the authorities did not know his status.
Have you found any records re children of Hugh Gallagher and Mary Friel/Fuell shown as his parents?

1891 census:
Dennis Gallacher, 35 yrs b Ireland is living in a lodging house in Uphall, West Lothian.

It may not be the same Denis as 1901 but it could mean that the 1901 is not your man.
