Shannon family from County Cavan
« on: Tuesday 11 January 22 04:26 GMT (UK) »
My great grandfather, John Shannon, arrived in Australia  in March 1863 on the ship British Trident and landed at Melbourne before moving to Sydney. He married Catherine Keough in 1867 at St Mary’s Cathedral Sydney and lived in Glebe NSW until his death at the Parramatta Asylum in 1900. On both his marriage and death certificates it states that he was from Cavan Ireland (not sure if this was County Cavan or Cavan in Clare) and from these documents his birth seems to have been somewhere around 1838. His parents on both documents appear as Thomas Shannon and Mary Blake (Black). He had a brother Robert who migrated to Sydney in 1874 and on his death certificate the parents are the same. I have also been told by an elderly aunt that there was a brother Thomas but have no evidence to support this.
I am seeking any information about John, Robert and their parents in Ireland and would be very grateful for any assistance that can be offered.

Good luck Poeticgardener - There is also Cavan in Co. Donegal. I to am interested in the Shannon's but my interest lies in Derrybeg Farm Limavady and Coleraine.

cheers

I have the marriage and death certificates of both Robert and John and it does seem that County Cavan is most likely. There father, Thomas is identified as a farmer on all documents.

Wivenhoe
The Marriage Certificate details are:
Date 24 Jan 1867
John Shannon Bachelor Co Cavan Ireland, Coach Proprietor 32yo Parents Thomas Shannon and Mary Blake Farmer
Catherine Keogh Spinster Co Wicklow Ireland, Servant  24 yo Parents Dermot Keogh and Ann toomy Farmer
Witnesses John and Hellenus Street
This is all on the marriage certificate.

Married in St Mary's Cathedral Sydney

On John's death certificate it lists his age as 65 years,  his father as Thomas Shannon Farmer and mother Mary Black, that he is Roman Catholic, born in Cavan Ireland and had been in the colony for 36 years at the time of death.

On the ship British Trident manifest in 1863 it states that John was 25 yo and a labourer. The ship arrived in Melbourne from Liverpool.

Thanks all for the interest and help.
