Birth
« on: Monday 24 January 22 12:36 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find the birth of an ancestor
His name is George Leaton, (a gentleman, a mason and wealthy merchant based in Newcastle upon Tyne)
It was stated on his marriage Banns that he was a bachelor, aged above 40 yrs, when he married in
Newcastle, all saints 07.06.1744 Elizabeth Coulter
“a widow.”
His only surviving child Elizabeth is my 7th great grandmother.
I have searched all local records but only get 2 Births back to 1666, 1674
and an unnamed child1698, father John Blenkinsop, Haltwhistle.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated
Regards Jenny

Births were only recorded from the onset of Civil Registration on 1st July 1837.
But you may find a baptism?
Garrad (Suffolk, Essex, Somerset), Crocker (Somerset), Vanstone (Devon, Jersey), Sims (Wiltshire), Bridger (Kent)

Dear BCD
Thank you for your reply.
It is George Blenkinsop
I have searched baptisms for Co Durham, northumberland and surrounding areas.
Sorry I have so many Leatons and Blenkinsop's they are a veritable minefield of searches.

George and his daughter Elizabeth is on the lineage of the Blenkinsop’s of Blenkinsop castle.
A different branch!
He definitely married Elizabeth Coulter 1744 in Newcastle upon Tyne.
Their daughter Elizabeth was the only surviving child of 6 children.

Does anyone know how the old marriage banns work out what they say about a persons age.

Does over 40 mean    40-50 years old
Then over 50 mean    50-60 years old

I am trying to get a clue to George’s approx birth year period
