CWGC Headstone Question
« on: Tuesday 25 January 22 15:20 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone offer an explanation why these two unrelated PALS are sharing a CWGC Military Headstone?

Anyone seen it before?

I have seen it before. They are both of the same regiment so it may be that it was not possible to identify which remains belonged to a specific person so they share a grave.

I have seen it claimed that this most, if not all, are buried in a long trench very close together and rather than try to squeeze in single headstones they opted for double headstones. A partly similar precedent was set at Guards Grave, Villers Cotterets, which is a communal burial. The position of those buried there is unknown but they are commemorated on double headstones arranged around the boundary wall. Needless to say, many now think that the headstones mark graves and the inadequate CWGC cemetery description does nothing to clarify matters.

Cheers Crumblie & Imber
A good logical explanation I hadn't considered.
There were 8 killed in action that day in the Second Battle of Kemmel at Ottawa Camp from the 18th Pals
along with several other Pals in the 17th & 19th presumably they suffered heavy enemy bombardment.
As they did not go into any attack.

If you go to the CWGC website the Grave Registration states Pte Webster was buried in Plot 9 and Pte Davies in Plot 10.
If you then look at the Headstone Details you can see that Plots 9 and 10 are bracketed together. As are the rest of the graves in that part.
I have no idea as to why but you could always message the CWGC and ask them.
