William GREIG married to Elizabeth FRASER b1777
« on: Wednesday 26 January 22 17:54 GMT (UK) »
Hello everybody,

I m looking for further information about William GREIG

GRIEG William
married 03 Dec 1803 in Parish Gamrie and Macduff (both in Gamrie and Macduff)
FRASER Elizabeth b 29 Aug 1777 in Gamrie and Macduff

Their sons:

Alexander GREIG  b (15) Oct 1804, bapt Oct 1804 in Gamrie, Banffshire
married 05 Aug 1826 in Gamrie
Jean Clark b 1795 Gamrie

Peter GREIG b 8 Mar 1809 in Gamrie
married about 1840 (where and when?)
Anne McKenzie b 1816 in Lochcarron, Ross und Cromarty
their kids Colin b 1843 and Magaret b1845 were born in France as British subjects

In some trees I ve found
GREIG William, b about 1734 King Edward, Aberdeenshire
as the above mentioned William's father and Elizabeth's husband.
I can't imagine, that this is correct.

Any assistance is very welcome
Thank you

Have you viewed the original baptism records of their children? If not, I recommend that you do so, as the baptism records may contain information that is not transcribed in the indexes available online - for example occupation, place of residence and names of witnesses. They are available to view at Scotland's People www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk for a small fee.

You are very wise not to trust the online tree you have found, as someone born in 1734 would have been 69 when William Greig and Elizabeth Fraser married in 1803. I see that there are only two recorded baptisms of William Greigs in Banffshire from 1700 to 1790, but there are 33 in neighbouring Aberdeenshire, not including King Edward.

You need to find out why the author of the tree came to that conclusion.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

There is no mention of these Greigs/Griegs/Griggs on any surviving gravestone in the Doune kirkyard at Macduff or in St John's kirkyard in Gamrie.

For some time marriages were recorded both in the Gamrie register and in the register at Macduff. It is always worth looking at both as one gives details of residence and names the witnesses, the other usually doesn't.
