Robert Thompson DALY WW1
« on: Wednesday 26 January 22 20:22 GMT (UK) »
ROBERT THOMPSON DALY died on 7 Jan 1917 at Maryborough, Portlaoise after service in the Great War. He was the son of John and Margaret Daly and had siblings Margaret, Joseph, Samuel and Christina. In 1911 the family were living at Coote Street, Maryborough. The family were Church of Ireland.
Can anyone tell me where Robert Thompson Daly is buried?

According to CWGC.org (Commonwealth War Graves Commission):
Commemorated at Brookwood 1914-1918 Memorial, Surrey

"THE BROOKWOOD 1914-1918 MEMORIAL was designed to commemorate Commonwealth casualties who died in the UK and Ireland who have no known grave."

The location of his grave is what I am trying to establish. The Dalys were long-term residents of Maryborough - Robert was born in Coote Street in 1895. It seems highly likely that he will have been buried in that locality.

Here's his death record-

He died of phthisis at Coote Street. The nearest Church of Ireland is St Peter’s Portlaoise.

It's at the corner of Coote Street and Grattan Street and according to the Historic 25" Map, it has a graveyard.

Do you have the burials of his family? Is he not buried with them?

Brother, Samuel died 1911

Sister, Margaret married at St Peter’s in 1922 so St Peter’s was likely the family church.

Parents died - John, 1931 and Margaret 1933.

There is a newspaper snippet - 25th April 1931 re John A Daly’s death but I do not have access to the article.

Brother Joseph also died 1917.

From the greatwarforum:
Robert Thompson Daly is one of five parishioners of Maryborough commemorated on a plaque in St. Peter's Church of Ireland, in Portlaoise.

The plaque reads:

"To the Glory of God

And in Proud and Faithful Memory of the

Following Members of This Parish who

Laid Down Their Lives in the

Great War. 1914 - 1918.

Erected by the Parishioners."

He is down as having been a sergeant in the R.A.O.C.
