I do not have access to Ancestry, however my DNA results are on it. I have been helping a friend with their Gane/Edley family connections. The Ceylon investigation has been fruitful, thanks to the help of Roots chat and Google. My personal thoughts are the families were led by commercial interests and not military. Thank you once again.

Shame you don't have access to Ancestry, as the family tree in question is comprehensive. Perhaps your friend can sort out access. Although if it's via a free trial, messaging Ancestry members isn't allowed. If your friend took out an Ancestry sub, they could swap notes with the family tree owner.

As far as I can make out Joseph Edley was a private or NCO in the 58th Foot, was posted to Ceylon with the regiment, and took his discharge there circa 1837.

One aspect to concentrate on is why Marion Gane was in Ceylon circa 1864. Her father was a solicitor and editor of various publications. Apparently he and/or his son (with same name) spent time in Canada. In fact, the elder William Lawe Gane died in Canada in 1879.

So was Marion the first Gane family member in India? Perhaps Google can help you shed more light on the Gane's in India.
For example: I don't see Marion in the 1861 census, living with mother Caroline and siblings in London. Where is Marion Gane in 1861?

Only know that on 19.02.1860 Spencer Walter, Ada Edith,, Marion, George Nathan & James Knight Gane were all baptised in Hornnsey, Middlesex. Ann Eliza, Marion Ann & Spencer Walter Gane all went out to Ceylon. They, or their partners were involved in the Tea Trade at some stage. These records are available, including a court case. Would be nice to know where Marion was in 1861.

Marion might be with father William Lawe Gane in Canada. In the 1861 census (London), Caroline Gane indicates "Husband in Canada". Or Marion could be away at school somewhere?

Correction re William Lawe Gane's occupation: He's always described as "gentleman" and he's a Clerk in HM Customs (1841 & 1851 census). Later he was an editor for and contributor to literary publications.
His son (also William Lawe Gane) was the solicitor. He also resided in Ottawa, Canada.

What would really assist, is finding out what happened to Spencer Walter Gane b 1851 in Middlesex. In 1895 he is the manager on a Ceylon tea estate. Cannot see him in 1901 or 1911 UK Census records. Did he stay in Ceylon, or move on.

This might be him?

Australia, Electoral Rolls, 1903-1980
Name:   Spencer Walter Gane
Electoral Date:   1910
Electoral Place:   Mount Magnet, Coolgardie, Western Australia

If you have access to FindMyPast, there is a 1910 record for a Spencer W Gane in the Western Australia Death Index.
