Help with initials in census record - Surname Rees
« on: Thursday 10 February 22 15:15 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I am not sure if I am correctly reading the initials of two people recorded in the 1891 census:-

RG12/4480/23 p 5

The initials are transcribed as T J T Rees b.1875 and M A T Rees b.1877 in Ancestry;  J J J and M A J in Findmypast.

In 1891 both individuals were living with Charles and Ann Rees (formerly Marsden).  At first, I thought they may have been children from a previous marriage of either Charles Rees or Ann Marsden but according to the information recorded in a copy of their marriage certificate neither had been previously married.  Charles is recorded as a bachelor and Ann as a spinster, they married on 22nd September 1884 in Swansea.

I can also find Charles & Ann Rees with their family in the 1901 Census (no trace of the individuals with the initials):-

1901 Census - RG13/5077/183 p1

Any help with this will be much appreciated  :)

There’s a birth registered in Swansea in Sep quarter 1877 of a Thomas John Pickett Rees, mother Pickett.

Can’t see the other one yet, but with the large gap before Catherine i would suggest they either were children of one of them, maybe Charles if the TJP Rees birth is a match, or they are not strictly their children, but related or taken on by Charles and Ann.

Hi Deirdre784,

Thank you for taking the time to respond.  I'm not able to request a copy of their birth certificates as I only have the initials of each individual and I'm not sure the transcriptions in Ancestry or Findmypast are correct, as well as only having the initials, the birth years for each child may not be all that accurate either, so tracking these individuals is proving challenging, I'm afraid :/

In 1901 Charles and Ann have 2 sons older than Catherine who weren’t with them in 1891, though the names and ages don’t match the initials.

Edited: apologies they were hidden, but still a strange entry going JJJ 1875, MAJ 1877, Catherine 1889, Charles 1883, then DJ 1886, and MJ 1891. Wonder if they are only given by initials as they are foster children maybe. The fully named ones appear on the GRO with birth registrations.

My foster suggestion is blown out of the window as MJ 1891 is Mary Jane mmn = Marsden, registered Dec quarter 1890.

It almost looks like any entries with more than one Christian name were entered with initials only. Other families on the same page are the same. Doesn’t solve your problem though sorry.
