RootsMagic or something else as I get more serious?
« on: Sunday 13 February 22 23:56 GMT (UK) »
Have been using Ancestry as my online storage but wondering if I should switch to another software programme eg RootsMagic.

Does anyone have a programme that they love that allows you to share/print/download your research findings with the people you've done it for?

You can have both ancestry and Rootsmagic as I have. When exporting your tree gedcom from ancestry to any other program it will not export any images so that can be a tedious job downloading and importing them. Others may know of a way to do it.

Thank you. What do you find that rootsmagic has that ancestry doesn’t? Why is it worth paying for rootsmagic software?

You can actually download a free version of Rootsmagic and for the past 12 months that is all I have been using but it is missing some features, which doesn't worry me as I work around them in my own way.
You can link your Rootsmagic tree to ancestry and the link gives you some insight as to what features are available on the pay version
https://rootsmagicsupport.com/sync-rootsmagic-tree-with-ancestry-com/

with ancestry everything is at hand - hints with matches in other trees, instant download of images, DNA matches if you have done a test and uploaded it.

Others will certainly be along with suggestions and help.

Thank you, I downloaded the free version of RM and had a play with it.

On the face of it I cannot see the advantage of it over Ancestry….has anyone got any feedback why I would want to have both - or to use the paid version of RM8 - if I am doing multiple trees for other people? Thank you!

Hello

With any family tree software on your PC you are able to do much more than with an online tree. You can interrogate the data in your tree to find out more about what's there in a way that you can't with an online tree. Let me give you a simple example. Try to identify all your direct line ancestors who were alive on 1st Jan 1900. Can you do that on ancestry? You might ask why would you want to do that. It's a way of focussing your research, or finding out more about a particular topic. Another example - make a list of all your relatives who fought in WW1. Once you maintain a local tree using family history software you find out more and more. Like many others I have a simple website where I document some of my research.

I couldn't do my research without my local tree. (I use Family Tree Maker)

All the best

Martin
