Missing parents help please.
« on: Wednesday 16 February 22 21:39 GMT (UK) »
Trying to find what happened to my G-Great Aunt and her husband, hopefully someone can help me move forward here!

George Taylor born c.1846 in Leicester and Elizabeth Stevenson born 1854 in Brampton Ash, Northamptonshire. They married on Christmas Day 1875 and St. Mary's, Leicester.

Found 2 children, Sy(i)dney born 1879 in St. Margarets, Leicester and Lilian born 1881.

According to the baptism registers the couple were living at 16, Carrington St.

In the 1881 census, the 4 of them are at Carrington St, and in 1891 they have moved to 52, Waring Street. This is the last I can find of George and Elizabeth. But when both children marry, father George is not down as deceased (although I have a few examples of dead fathers not being marked as deceased on certificates).

Sydney married Jennie Kirk in 1904, St. Matthews, Leicester with a witness names Lilian Goddard (his sister).
Lilian married Thomas William Goddard at St. Georges, Leicester on 09 Jul 1898. No sign of George or Elizabeth after 1881.

Can somebody help me please?

Thanks.
David.

There was a George Taylor buried in Welford Road in 1897, age 51, address Brandon St, I wonder if this might be your man. In the same grave were William Gunn, Thomas Harvey, Beatrice Nelly Jones and George Henry Taylor but no Elizabeth.

A 44 yr old Elizabeth Taylor from Brandon St was buried in 1896 in another grave. She shares the grave with two babies with the surname Haltam, and two Taylors from Birstall St - a baby called Marion Jane, died 1889, and an adult called Ruth Sutton Taylor, also from Birstall St.

Was George Taylor a bricklayer?

Leicester Chronicle
11 June 1898 (page 6)
"An inquiry into the death of Elizabeth Taylor, aged 42, wife of George Taylor, bricklayer's labourer, of Upper Charles-street, was held at the Town Hall, before Mr Robert Harvey, on Wednesday afternoon.
Lilian Taylor, a daughter of deceased, said her mother had complained of a pain at the chest for some time - She had been medically attended ..."

Is this related to the family?  :o

Leicester Chronicle
27 August 1892 (page 3)
"A Revolting Charge — George Taylor (48), bricklayer's labourer, was summoned for allowing his house to be used as a disorderly house between the 6th and 13th inst. — Evidence revealing a disgusting state of things was given, and the Chairman said it was a very bad case indeed. Nothing could demoralise the town more than cases of that kind. The Bench thought that sending defendant to prison was more likely to put a stop to it than anything else, and he would have to go for two months. — Defendant May I appeal, sir?— The Chairman : You can do what you like..."

Oh dear. I wonder what was going on in the house? Illegal gambling, or things of an ill-repute nature? Probably the latter, given that the charge is described as "revolting".

Oh dear!  :-[

Can I ask what search terms you use for your searches? As you seem to find more than me!

Thanks!

Can I ask what search terms you use for your searches? As you seem to find more than me!

Bearing in mind that OCR text can mangle words, I usually stick with a person's name, job title, or an address. Less is more. For the death/inquest report, I searched with "Lilian Taylor" in Leicester newspapers. For the "Revolting charge" report, I searched with "George Taylor" + "bricklayer".
