Death of Emma Childs, Riverside County, California, 1909
« on: Sunday 20 February 22 04:20 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone find an obituary [or a death certificate] for Emma Viola Logan Childs who died 12 May 1909 in Palm Springs, Riverside County, California.  Emma was born on 29 August 1862 in Outagamie County, Wisconsin.  She was the wife of Eli Alexander Childs - known as Eli A. or Elias A. or E. A. Childs.  Not infrequently, the 's' got dropped from his surname.

With the free access to Newspapers.com this weekend, I have searched and searched without any luck. There are plenty of references to Eli as he bumbled his way across the country from Wisconsin to Oregon to Idaho to New Mexico to Riverside County and finally to Los Angeles but nothing on Emma.  I'd like to know how she came to die so young.

Find a Grave she died 9 December 1909. (this must be her burial date).

California death index death says 12/5/1909 or December 5th, 1909.

Americans write the dates as month, day, year. (except the American military)

Everyone else it's day month year.

I think you're right, she died in December.  She was, at least initially, buried in California.  A California newspaper article notes her husband visiting her grave in Banning on Memorial Day 1910.  Whether her body was later shipped to Wisconsin to be buried with her parents, I don't know.  Her brother, who died in childhood, is also listed with his parents but he was actually buried up in Outagamie County in 1878.

She died from tuberculosis.

Thanks, RJ!  I've always wondered.  Maybe Eli dragged her down to Albuquerque and then to Riverside in search of a better climate.
