John Sutton of Claybrook
« on: Wednesday 23 February 22 06:22 GMT (UK) »
Hi all
I am looking into my ancestor John Sutton who got married, had his children and was buried in Claybrook.  A Family tree on Ancestry shows him born in ullesthorpe in 1590 son of John and Agnes.
I have found many trees on Ancestry to be fanciful at best but this seems possible. Can anyone verify this as it seems I cannot?
Many thanks
Pauline

At this distance, the only info on the parish registers will be the names, unless you’re lucky enough to find a marriage register which states that one of the wedding party was from elsewhere, or was married with the consent of a named father. Records are patchy and not very legible when you go that far back, and I think it’s perfectly possible for someone to find that there’s only one person listed with the correct name, and assume that that is them. Of course there may have been several others, but those records haven’t survived.

Having said that, I can’t see a baptism in Ullesthorpe for someone of this name in 1590. The closest I’m getting is 1587 in Bitteswell, or 1600 in Countesthorpe. FindMyPast isn’t giving any BMDs at Ullesthorpe for anyone called Sut*n in this time period. (Added - in fact FindMyPast doesn’t seem to have any PRs at all for Ullesthorpe until the 1800s, so I wonder where the ancestry tree owners got their suggestion).

Have you tried looking for wills, court cases, tax details etc to see if you can uncover anything else?

You could also look into the history of churches in this area - were some parishes lacking a priest thereby making villagers use another church?

Thanks Annie.
I'm relieved in a way that no-one else can find this. I can't even see that Ullesthorpe had its own church, I'll have to bite on the bullet and ask the owner of the family tree outright.

From Wikipedia:

In 1870-1872- John Marius Wilson's described Ullesthorpe as: "A hamlet in Claybrooke parish, Leicester; on the Rugby and Leicester railway, 3¼ miles NW of Lutterworth".[4]

Until the mid 19th century, Ullesthorpe was a minor settlement within the Ancient Parish of Claybrook. Other villages included Claybrooke Magna, Claybrooke Parva, and Wibtoft. These four villages formed the parish of St Peter's Church Claybrooke.[5] However, deemed under the 1866 Act, many villages became their own civil parish.[6] Although Ullesthorpe is still part of St Peter's Parish Church,[5] Ullesthorpe now has its own civil parish where people are elected into Ullesthorpe Parish Council[7] who form a local government unit and control finances within the local village.[8]

Hi
The Leicestershire & Rutland Wills Index does have an entry for John Sutton of Ullesthorpe Ref 108 1638 Archdeaconry Court. Admin Lost.  Maybe worth contacting Leicester Records Office.
The Claybrook parish register doesn't list any place of abode until the 1760's.
