Are copies of Wills available?
« on: Tuesday 01 March 22 14:07 GMT (UK) »
Hi
is there any information available for Wills or probate  for those who died in Ireland? The person I'm looking for lived in Castlebar and died there in 1923.
Thanks for reading my post

Thankyou Kiltaglassen - that has proved very useful. I've found the man I was looking for and I m really glad I asked for help in finding this information. The man, Joseph Prossor left £240. It also stated that he was manager which has confirmed what I thought - he was the manager of the Castlebar bacon factory. I've always thought that he would have left a lot more than that so seeing the will has brought me down to earth!

My GGF near Castlebar was once fined for his straying pigs. He was worth only £20 when he died a decade before Joseph Prosser.

That is a detailed photograph Maiden Stone - thank you for posting it. Certainly shows just what a big concern the bacon factory was at the time. I remember reading an article describing how around about 1920 the local roads were blocked as farmers and other owners of pigs walked their animals to the factory. Your Gt Gt Grandfather must have been unlucky to be caught as it sounded to me as though everybody in the area owned pigs.

He lived near a small police barracks. His pigs may have wandered onto the road unaccompanied.
Bacon & cabbage was a staple dish and a traditional meal on St. Patrick's Day.

Am I wrong in thinking that £240 was actually a lot of money in the 1920s?
