Joseph Sear(s) 1810 baptism record?
« on: Saturday 05 March 22 19:16 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,

I am looking for the baptism record of an ancestor of mine named Joseph Sear (or Sears), born around 1810, possibly in Hertford. His 1849 death record gives his age as 39, so he was either born in 1809 or 1810 (give or take a year or two).

He married Lydia Heath in 1840 in Hertford, and the marriage record gives his father's name as William Sear, but I cannot find a baptism record for a Joseph Sear or Joseph Sears with father's name William.

Any leads would be greatly appreciated!

If you look at the 1841 entry for him - he is shown as not born in county - so not b Herts

I didn't notice that when I first looked at it - thanks for pointing it out!

I've just checked Parish Baptisms of Find My Past, and there's a Joseph Sears baptised on 23 December 1810 in Canterbury, parents' names William and Ann. The only thing is, Canterbury to Hertford is a mighty distance to travel, especially c.200 years ago, so I'm still not sure if it's the right person.

I'm sure you're already aware, but is this your Joseph's death in 1849?

Hertford Mercury and Reformer
28 July 1849 (Page 2 or 3)
"Tuesday, an inquest was held at Bull's Head, Turnford, Cheshunt, before Thomas Sworder, Esq., Coroner, on view of the body of Joseph Sears, aged 39, porter in the employ of Mr. John Kimpton, of Hertford.
It appeared from the evidence that on Sunday night the ..."

Jack - On the 1840 marriage record, what is the occupation for father William Sear(s)?

Jack - On the 1840 marriage record, what is the occupation for father William Sear(s)?

I've found the newspaper article for Joseph's death - it is most likely the same person, as in the 1851 Census, his wife Lydia is listed as widowed. Their son William (my ancestor) was born around 6 months after Joseph died.

The article says that Joseph left behind three children; their names were Joseph (b. 1840), Ann (b. 1842), and John (b. 1845). Their daughter Elizabeth Edbrow Sear died 6 months before Joseph aged 16 months, and as I said, William was born after Joseph's death.

Joseph and Lydia's marriage record states that William Sear (Joseph's father) was a carpenter. Joseph himself was a gardener.

Hi
One of the witnesses at his wedding is Maria Sears.
A possible bapt for her at Hertford  All Saints
Maria d of William and Anne 23.6.1816 labourer Butcherley Green

Sibling John 26.9.1819 born  ,bapt 20.9.1820- Walefield  ,Ann  and Elizabeth Edbrow 13.1.1822 -Walefield  ,Hannah 19.9.1824,William 30.9.1827  -Wallfield.

When Elizabeth Edbrow married William Jeffrey at St Andrews 1841 her father is given as William Sears carpenter.

It does look like the same family.
William was buried at All Saints 26.8.1828 age 50 of Wall Field
Ann Sears St Andrews St at St Andrews  13.7.1858 age 76

The censuses for Anne give her born in Hertford and as there are only two children in Canterbury -John band died  1809 and Joseph 1810 it looks like the couple briefly moved from Hertford for work and then moved back again.
I'd go for a marriage at All Saints Hertford to Ann Burton 12.12.1808.

Thank you Carole, Hillhurst, CiderDrinker, and Lizzie for your help!

I now have a better picture of the Sear/Sears family, and can now start working on tracing them further back.

Looks like William's aunt married twice:

England and Wales, National Index of Wills and Administrations, 1858-1957
Name   Elizabeth Edbrow Dewson
Probate Date   4 Aug 1905
Probate Place   Hertfordshire, England, United Kingdom
Death Date   8 Jul 1905
Beneficiary's Name   William Sear

Looks like her second husband John Dewson left her money. (Wasn't her first husband William Jeffrey [baker] quite elderly when he married Elizabeth Edbrow in 1841? I think he was abount 80 when he died a few years after the marriage).

England and Wales, National Index of Wills and Administrations, 1858-1957
Name   John Dewson
Probate Date   13 Jul 1869
Probate Place   England, United Kingdom
Probate Place (Original)   Principal Registry
Death Date   24 May 1869
Beneficiary's Name   Elizabeth Edbrow Dewson
